IAS - INTERNATIONAL SOCIETY * It implemented a program to assist developing countries in the development of infrastructures for the participation in clinical trials on the HIV infection, including the set up of proper laboratory facilities. * The IAS lobbied towards pharmaceutical companies in order to obtain a reduction of the drug prices for the poorest countries of the world. * It provided funds for the attendance of people living with HIV/AIDS and activists to the International Conferences on AIDS. * The IAS set up a cooperation with other organizations (UNAIDS, ICASO, GNP+, ICW etc.) to meet common goals. * It is publishing a quarterly newsletter with carefully selected articles by International experts in the area. * Since 1998 it has established a "Young Investigator Award" to young scientists who had submitted abstracts to the International Conferences on AIDS within the four different Tracks: Basic Science; Clinical Science and Care; Epidemiology, Prevention and Public Health, and Social and Behavioral Science. * It has established a charity account for the distribution of funds received from various donors to support children affected by HIV/AIDS (Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB), No. 5267-10 262 93 Stockholm, Sweden). * According to the Bylaws the IAS shall serve as an international forum for scientific interest groups and caucuses on HIV and AIDS. Presently, there are two established IAS Caucuses: - The International AIDS Society's Women's Caucus - The Women's Caucus of the International AIDS Society was formed 1992 in Amsterdam, at the VIII International AIDS Conference, to promote networking among women's groups working on the issues of women affected by or living with HIV. Another goal of the Caucus was to address women's issues at the International Conferences. - The IAS Caucus for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns - The Caucus was established in 1991 at the VII International AIDS Conference in Florence in order to pursue its founding principle: that lesbian, gay and bisexual issues are fundamental to and not separate from the issues driving research, prevention and treatment. The Caucus sees its tasks to gather existing data on concerned issues and to encourage dialogue in areas yet unexamined, such as woman-to-woman transmission, developmental concerns and the implication of scientific research, treatment and successful prevention programs. IAS organizational structure Any person who is professionally involved in the fight against HIV/AIDS, from any country of thw world, can become a member of IAS at the nominal cost of 30 $US/year. Members from five geographic regions of the world elect five members every second and fourth year who are the component of the IAS Governing Council.
