The New Joint Guide for the Use of Antiretroviral Treatments in Resource Limited Settings Presented Today
However, there is evidence that in patients with advanced HIV disease who are at high risk of progression, dual nucleoside regimens produce some benefit even though they cannot achieve or sustain suppression of HIV replication to the same extent as the threedrug regimens. Despite this limitation, where a more potent regimen is not available, 2 nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors may be suitable for use in resource limited settings. "Research is vital to inform future treatment and care decisions as well as for the advancement of scientific knowledge," said Stefano Vella, IAS, and added "to date there has been a paucity of controlled clinical trials conducted in low and middle-income countries." "It is also of paramount importance that countries design information and training plans as an integral part of ART programs," said Paula Munderi, WHO. "This is why the joint guide defines suitable topics for research and information and training needs for resource limited settings," concluded Mark Wainberg, IAS.
