[Flier, International AIDS Society]

IAS INTERNATIONAL AIDS SOCIETY "Care givers, public health and social workers dealing with AIDS patients and the epidemic were from the very onset characterised by qualities like compassion and devotion. This also applies to the basic scientists, who feel the responsibility and urgency to discover the ways to prevent and treat HIV infection. All these individuals have been joined in a unique global movement of solidarity with PHLA to fight discrimination and stigmatisation. Sharing of all of these sentiments is the very soul and driving force behind the IAS". LARS O. KALLINGS, FOUNDING PRESIDENT OF IAS, CURRENTLY SECRETARY-GENERAL general aim of the Program is to improve and enhance the care of people with HIV linked to prevention, by drawing on the extensive expertise of the members of the International AIDS Society. For further information, please see the IAS Web page ( http://www.ias.se). IAS Newsletter - published three times a year. The Newsletter gives our members access to carefully selected articles by leading experts within the scientific community. The topics are chosen with a view to give current information on relevant themes, scientific activism and debate. There are also membership updates and information on forthcoming events related to HIV/AIDS worldwide. The IAS Newsletter is included within the IAS official Journal AIDS to subscribing IAS members. For members who do not wish to subscribe to AIDS and to the Affiliated Societies the Newsletter is distributed directly. IAS Official Journal: Please see further information ahead in this Brochure. Young Investigator Award In connection with the XII International AIDS Conference in Geneva, 1998 the IAS established a "Young Investigator Award" to young scientists who had submitted abstracts to the Conference within the four different Tracks: Basic Science; Clinical Science and Care; Epidemiology, Prevention and Public Health, and Social and Behavioural Science. A jury reviewed the submitted contributions and selected an Award winner in each Track. The "Young Investigator Award" initiative will be repeated at all future International AIDS Conferences. Charity Account: "For the Children in the World" The IAS has received a number of generous donations from individuals and from companies. A general wish from donators to use these funds to help children afflicted by HIV/AIDS around the world has initiated the IAS to set up a special bank account for such donations. These funds will be used to support children affected by HIV/AIDS. The IAS will work through well-established organisations and will carefully follow-up the use of the funds. The account will be audited. Hopefully this trend will continue. If you would like to contribute in some way, please do so. The IAS will list the names of new contributors in each issue of the Newsletter and on the IAS Web Page. The bank account details are: Skandinaviska Enskilda Banken (SEB), Account No. 5267-10 262 93 Stockholm, Sweden. IAS Caucuses According to the Bylaws the IAS shall serve as an international forum for scientific interest groups and caucuses on HIV and AIDS. Presently, there are two established IAS Caucuses: The International AIDS Society's Women's Caucus The Women's Caucus of the International AIDS Society was formed 1992 in Amsterdam, at the VIII International AIDS Conference, to promote networking among women's groups working on the issues of women affected by or living with HIV. Another goal of the Caucus was to address women's issues at the International Conferences. For further information: loyce Hunter, Liaison from the IAS Women's Caucus; E-mail: [email protected] Mabel Bianco Coordinator, IAS Women's Caucus; Tel/Fax: +54-1-476-2763. The IAS Caucus for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns The Caucus was established in 1991 at the VII International AIDS Conference in Florence in order to pursue its founding principle: that lesbian, gay and bisexual issues are fundamental to and not separate from the issues driving research, prevention and treatment. The Caucus sees its tasks to gather existing data on concerned issues and to encourage dialogue in areas yet unexamined, such as woman-to-woman transmission, developmental concerns and the implication of scientific research, treatment and successful prevention programmes. For further information: Clint Gould Co-Chair IAS Caucus for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns. Email: [email protected] Joyce Hunter, Co-chair IAS Caucus for Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Concerns.
