- rASINTE:1RAIONALgA*IDS SOIETY The IAS was founded as a non-profit organisation in connection with the IV International AIDS Conference in Stockholm, 1988, primarily to decide on future venues of the series of International AIDS Conferences and to serve as a network for those working with HIV/AIDS. During the Yokohama Conference in 1994 the IAS was restructured and established a Permanent Secretariat with an appointed Secretary General enabling the IAS to take on responsibility regarding programme and finances of the International AIDS Conferences. Since then IAS has grown and comprises today more than 10,000 members, both individual members (approx. 6,000) and an increasing number of affiliated national AIDS societies. The IAS individual members consisting of mainly scientists and health care professionals, originate from more than 132 countries. Responsibility for the series of International AIDS Conferences: As custodian of the series of International AIDS Conferences, the IAS is responsible not only for the choice of venue and assurance of a high scientific quality of the programme but also for financing of these huge, biennial events (11-13,000 participants). The financial responsibility includes fundraising, pre-financing, cost-efficiency, transparency and accountability. Audited budgets are made public. After the International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa in 2000, the next Conference will be held in Barcelona, Spain. Bids to host future Conferences has been received by the Secretariat and is being considered by a Bid Committee. Regional Conferences and Symposia: In between the International AIDS Conferences, the IAS is co-sponsoring the Regional Conferences on HIV/AIDS in Africa, in Asia and the Pacific, and in Latin America. IAS arranges Symposia on clinical management and prevention in connection with these Conferences. - To contribute to the control and management of HIV infection and AIDS throughout the world in co-operation with national and regional AIDS Societies, with UNAIDS and other international organisations including non-governmental organisations. - To serve as an international forum for scientific interest groups and caucuses on HIV and AIDS. To initiate, co-ordinate and evaluate activities to control HIV and AIDS. -To organise international conferences and subspecialty conferences on HIV infection and AIDS, in particular the series of biennial International AIDS Conferences and Conferences on HIV Pathogenicity and Clinical Care in the intervening years. -To organise training courses related to HIV infection and AIDS, particularly the Educational Program on Clinical Management and Prevention of HIV Infection (SHARE). -To represent the scientific community as a voice of reason in AIDS controversies, to counteract discrimination and promote the ethical aspects of research and interventions. -To advocate for adequate resources for research and training as well as for controlling the epidemic and alleviating its consequences. -To solicit and receive funds in support for the IAS activities against HIV and AIDS. -To serve as a central registry of individuals professionally involved in AIDS research and activities to treat and prevent HIV infection. -The IAS is not organised nor is it to be operated for profit. The program is primarily directed towards developing countries, but will start with countries in economical transition. The primary target will be physicians and other healthcare workers, as well as allied professionals such as health care resource planners and public health experts. The
