196 Abstracts 13554-13559 12th World AIDS Conference consume (family, stealing), marginality, AIDS (contagion ways, prevention, prejudices). Condom uses. Life proyects. The way to work with teachers and pupils' parents is through information and reflexion workshops in order to answer and form, based on pupils' own questions. At last, reflection workshops with pupils, using games and dramatization techniques. Results: 80% of these students never speak about these themes with their parents, taking into account that things aren't spoken, may turn into an act. The intervention made in these three decesive moments allows the students, their parents and the teachers to use the necessary "tools" to choose in their future construction, based on the health right. Information and the compromisse of social actors allow them to put in practise their health rights. S13554 1 Peer education on ARH in secondary training colleges Emmanuel R. Hottor. 5th Floor Bay 1 State House, Accra, Ghana Issue: To provide peer education on adolescent reproductive health (ARH) for the youth henes generating a demand for accurate information and education and assisting in the reduction of high risk behavior. Project: Misinformation among the youth with regards to arh in Ghana in strategy using the youth with focus on the in-school was adopted. The project had a team of a social worker, adult educators, project co-ordinator and 5 assistants trained by (CEDPA) USA. 10 students each from 10 second cycle schools and training colleges in Ghana were trained in anatomy, human sexuality, reproductive health, STDS/HIV/AIDS, consequencies of unprotected sees peer pressure etc. Results: The peer education training workshops was successfully held for over 100 students within 3 months eventhough the target number was 100. Lessons Learned: The training of peer educators in schools is potentially aviable one if geared to words changing of high risk behavior among the youth.. S113555 Prevention programs in public schools Hubert Alqueres. Rua Rodolfo Miranda - 636 - Bom Retiro Sao Paulo - Capital -CEP - 01121-900, Brazil Issue: Teachers, principals and supervisors training to develop prevention projects in sexual transmissible diseases, AIDS and use of drugs in school units. Project: According to the USAID report about Brazil, Sao Paulo has 51% of the HIV infection cases of the country. UNESCO considers school is the place more adapted for the development of preventive actions. The Secretariats of Education and Health of the State of Sao Paulo are developing in partnership the program "Prevengao Tambem se Ensina" in 1,548 public schools, reaching 4,644 teachers and approximately 1,500,000 students among 11 and 18 years old. The principal and two teachers of each school are being trained, being able to the elaboration, development and evaluation of projects, adapted to the reality of their school. The training activities also seek to endow the school with specific didactic material and to create informal community spaces for discussion of specific themes related to prevention.. The project started in 1995. Results: 70% of the 1,238 schools that finished training already present prevention projects implanted in the school curriculum. Until the end of 1998 the training will be finished, and, starting from 1999, 100% of reached schools will be in process their projects. Learned lessons: Prevention programs for adolescents obtain larger success if developed by schools and if adapted to their regional characteristics. The local communities involvement in the projects of the schools guarantees their continuity. When school takes the responsibility for prevention, the possibilities of long term continuity are increased. 13556 1 Primary school: Information vs. discrimination Andrea P. Celentano, C. Martearena, A. Badia. Ricardo Gutierrez 193, 2000 Rosario, Argentina Issue: Given the rapid increase in the number of children with AIDS at primary school is considered an urgency of information for parent's children, teachers, and school assistants to avoid psicological damages produced from discrimination to this infected children. Project: With the implementation of the new terapeutics and prophilaxis the children with AIDS have the posibility to attend at school elderly. For this reason was established a discussion programm. At first was distributed a questionare to know the issues that distress the parent's children, and teachers. This programm includes workshops cordinated by qualified professional. Results: 71% exactly responded to AIDS knowledges. Of the rest 29%: The 12% gave confuse responses and the 8% did'nt give a clear idea. The 79% have clear concepts about transmision. The 46% disapproved discrimination. The 63% indicated that with more education and information should avoid the discrimination. Lessons Learned: This workshop about biosecurity modify the discriminant attitude from adults to children with AIDS. 135571 Prevention of SIDS and AIDS in schools "Lycee Moderne d Vavoua" in the west center of C6te d'lvoire, 430 km from Abidjan Bi Dribonee Boua, Bi Boua Roberts, Gnepa Monique, Gervais Bli, Noelle Bali, Helene Bala. 04 BP 2113 AbJ 04, Cote D'Ivoire Objectives: Prevent and make the youth sensitive on the different ways of catching SIDS and AIDS. -Develop the sense of responsibility before the impacts of this disease. Methods: -In 1996 we organised two days of sensibilization on SIDS and AIDS at "Lycee Moderne de Vavoua" with collaboration of the school administration and the medical staff of the hospital of "Vavoua", through projections of diapositives an SIDS and video cassettes on AIDS followed by debates. During the debate we chose 100 volunteers: S50 girls and 50 boys whose age were between 16 and 20 years old for a medical visit in the town hospital. In order to know the prevalence raw of SIDS. The visit was composed of two aspects: (1) Physical aspect; (2) Paraclinical aspect in laboratory that is in relation with the direct examination (for the search of parasits) and the cytobacteriology of urine "ECBU" in a systematic manner. - In 1997 we initiated a challenge test named "une annee scolaire sans MST", doted with presents. This challenge test extended on 9 months: from October 1996 to June 1997. Pupils among whom 25 per sex took part in the test. This number could facilitate the good tutoring of the participants. Twice a month during 9 months. Let it be 18 visits per participants in 9 months. Results 96: Boys physical examination Two cases of "puribinious dermatite" (4%); one case of "chancre mou" (2%); one case of "eczema margine" (2%). Girls: Five cases of "leucorrhee" (10%); two cases of "ulceration herpetiave of the vulva" (4%); three cases of pelviennes pain (6%), one case of inguinal adermopathy (2%). Paraclinical lest (labo): boys: two cases of gonococcy (4%); one case of trichomona vaginilis (8%) In total 13% of suspected cases at the physical test and 14% of pupils were declared infected by SIDS (7% of boys and 20% of girls). Results 97: In total the laboratory and the physical examination showed 1.75% of SIDS infection during the 9 months of the test. Conclusion: The views of the results of the test we notice that the participants used "capotes" or kept thenselves from sexual contacts during the year. The rewords that were constituted of school items were a great stimulant. The pupils wpushed that tho test should be organised on a larger scale the next school year and with the participation of more people than before. So we think that such a sensibilization in the youth area should make them responsible face to sexuality and stop the distribution of SIDS AND AIDS. S13558 1 A school-based AIDS education programme for secondary school students in Ibadan, Nigeria: A review of effectiveness Olu Funnmilayo Fawole1, M.C. Asuzu1, S.O. Oduntan2. 1Sub-Dept. of Comm. Med. Dept. of PSM UCH IB., Ibadan; 2Fac. of Pub. Hlth National P/G Med. College, Lagos, Nigeria Background: In Nigeria, young people are becoming sexually active at an increasingly earlier age. They are therefore at risk of contacting sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy of a school based education programme on the knowledge, attitude and sexual risk behaviours of secondary school students. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: The knowledge, attitude and sexual risk behaviors of 223 students who received a comprehensive health education, intervention (consisting of lectures, filmshow, role-play, stories, song, debate and essays) were compared with 217 controls. Results: At post-test, intervention students exhibited greater knowledge about likely to feel AIDS is a whiteman's disease and were more likely to be tolerant of people living with the disease (P < 0.05). After the intervention, the mean number of reported sexual partners among the experimental students significantly decreased from 1.51 to 1.06 while it increased from 1.3 to 1.39 among the controls. Among the intervention students there was also an increase in consistent use of the condom and the use of the condom at last sexual intercourse. Students can benefit from specific education programmes that transmit important information necessary to prevent risky behaviour and improve knowledge and attitudes on HIV/AIDS. 1135591 The secondary pupils (form one and form four), their teachers and their parents as far as AIDS in Togo Kpante Bassabi, S.
