Bridging the Gap: Conference Record [Abstract book, International Conference on AIDS (12th: 1998: Geneva, Switzerland)]

12th World AIDS Conference Abstracts 60887-60891 1163 only one had a VL lesser than 20 c/mL. All the other sample results were higher than this cut-off value and 4 of them had more than 500 c/mL. Conclusion: This evaluation indicates than in the majority of samples (66%), the use of an ultra-sensitive method for HIV -RNA quantification with ubiquitous primers is a valuable approach. In most discordant results (87%) a higher level is evidenced. Two aspects need further investigations: high values seem to be underestimated; negative HIV-RNA value obtained by standard methods is rarely associated with an undetectable level using ultra-sensitive HIV-1 Monitor' with ubiquitous primers. Kloser1, P.K. Correll1. UMDNJ/New Jersey Medical School, Newark NJ; 2695 Cardinal Hill Lane, Powell, Ohio, USA; 3Center for Tropical Diseases, Hochiminh City, Vietnam (USA) Issues: An increase in the number of people with HIV infection that lack family, social, economic and/or medical support has been noted in HCMC. Certain populations at-risk for HIV infection have not received education and prevention information through existing programs. The rate of HIV infection has not decreased in high-risk groups, particularly commercial sex workers. Project: A pilot program, "Friends Helping Friends", has been developed by the Center for Tropical Disease in HCMC. The program consists of 45 three hour courses conducted over a period of 5 weeks by physicians, nurses and social workers. The course topics include patient care, hygiene, psychosocial aspects of HIV disease, finding sources of housing, food, clothing and funds for health care and treatment, safe sex practices, the location of needle exchange programs, the prevention of HIV transmission and the principles of self-care. Participants are volunteers that are HIV infected and will be certified by the AIDS Committee. A major program goal is to facilitate interaction among clients with HIV infection, their families, the community and health care providers. Results: The first class of 24 volunteers had their first course in January of 1998. The class consisted of twenty males with a history of intravenous drug use and four females that had been commercial sex workers. The class members were excited about assisting other people with HIV disease. The members felt that they could limit suffering and reduce the negative view of HIV disease by assisting their community. Lessons Learned: Studies have shown that peer education has not been effective in HCMC for reducing high-risk behaviors, however, this unique approach provides practical assistance in conjunction with education and may be more successful. Participants and instructors are committed to the program which may determine whether the program is successful in obtaining the envisioned goals.
