1154 Abstracts 60836-60841 12th World AIDS Conference 60836 HIV prevention should begin at school age (6-10 years) Giovanni Piu, G. Pitzalis, V. Piu, E. Piu, C. Trarontin, A.M. Sotgiu. Sardinian Association Preventions AIDS, Via San Saturnino 58/A, 09127 Cagliari, Italy Issue: The A.S.P.A. (Sardinian Association for the Prevention of AIDS) wich was founded in 1990 in Cagliari, brings together, as laid down in the first article of its statute, all those, without distinction of sex or age, who would like to volontarily contribute to inform, prevent and help in the fight against AIDS using all the methods adopted by a non-profit making organization without any political or religious tendencies. Project: An educational programme against AIDS stimulate both personal and social responsability and must include notions of sexual education and human biology, therefore numerous experts of infective illnesses from the field of microbiology and virology who for many years have been fighting this illness work for the A.S.P.A.. The Association's messages have been aimed at thousand of primary, secondary and high students in Sardinia and Tuscany through meetings, marches, concerts and shows and have always been accompanied by the presence of the Association's mascot "ASPINO". It should not be forgotten that "ASPINO" is known all over the world having participated in the International AIDS Conferences held in Florence, Amsterdam, Berlin, Yokohama and Vancouver. To date, more than 650.000 informative pampleths have been distributed including "The story of ASPINO" given to primary school students. These were printed thanks to financing from the Sardinian Regional Government and were sponsored by the Health, Hygiene and Social Services Department. The booklet is written in very simple language with a number of essential images wich explain to the children what the HIV virus is, how it is transmitted and what the state of HIV positive is. Results: These initiatives have enabled us to obtain a reduction in the number of cases of AIDS in Sardinia wich in fact has passed from 5th to the 11th highest hit region in Italy for AIDS cases wich are reported on a regular basis by the Italian Ministry of Health. Lessons Learned: the Association was created in the knowledge that "Prevention" was the only effective low cost weapon, especially if aimed at the very young (6-10 years old), and still today the main tool to fight this grave problem is to inform and make people aware of how this pathology is sexually transmitted, especially the young who are without doubt one of the groups most at risk. 60837 A help-with-housing workshop: an original tool Sabrina Palama. Solidarite Enfants Sida 125 Rue Diavrov 75020 Paris, France Issue: Access to housing and dynamics of families living with HIV: a collective action. Project: Housing being hard to find in the Paris area and families' situation growing more and more difficult, Sol En Si created in 1993 a workshop for families in need of steady housing. The workshop meets three times a week and is based on: 1/advertisement scouting; 2/negociation between families on the offers directly made to Sol En Si; 3/preparing applications for welfare housing; 4/assistance with budget managing; 5/re-stimulation of people at the end of their tether. Results: In 1997, out of 58 families who regularly attended the workshops: 16 were housed in Sol En Si flats; 6 got a social flat; 7 found an "on the market" flat; 10 received financial assistance for private housing; 3 got therapeutic flats; 5 are not in touch any more; 6 still attend the workshop. Lessons learned: The initial principle, which was based on an energy balance to settle the problem, i.e. 50% energy from Sol En Si, 50% from the families, seems correct so as to ensure proper integration of the family in their new home. Bhattacharva, S. Sengupta, J. Hague, R. Naravan, N. Agrawa1, S. Ray2. 1 WBSHP 9A Little Russel Street Calcutta-700071, West Bengal, India Issue: Importance of building partnerships and effective networks in implementing sustainable sexual health interventions Project: The West Bengal Sexual Health Project (WBSHP) is creating and sustaining managed networks of key players including stakeholders of the WBSHP at the primary level and network of NGOs, State and Central Govt institutions, research institutions, para-statal organisations, National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), UNAIDS and other donor agencies at the secondary level. Results: The WBSHP has been successful in establishing effective networks and building partnerships between various stakeholders and encouraging referrals among project partners, private practitioners, governmental and other non-governmental institutions by a) identifying and stimulating existing networks, fora, groups to effectively address sexual health issues, b) stimulating formation of new networks to address sexual health issues especially across sectoral boundaries c) documenting and disseminating best practice in existing and future interventions, d) facilitating capacity building for effective advocacy, e) stimulating supportive legal ethical environment for effective sexual health services access and delivery, through research and training initiatives, f) publishing newsletter focusing primarily on sexual health issues and g) facilitating exchange and exposure programmes among peolple working in HIV/AIDS. Lessons Learned: Networking support helps in establishing linkages between sexual health policy makers, planners and organisations and individuals involved in sexual health planning and service delivery for sharing knowledge, experience, expertise and resources and to help in promoting best practice and advocating supportive public policies and collective action. Stimulating effective networks paves the way to sustainability 60841 STD/AIDS and soldiers in the army in Senegal Amadou Sow Papa. S/C Project Raf 91/004 PNUD Regional BP 154 Dakar, Senegal Objectives: I am thinking about a project for solidiers who are big migrants because of they use to be sent to work, after each two or four years some where else the aim is to accomplish (a) To increase dissemination of information on STD and HIV (b) To increase accessibility to condom (c) To encourage correct and consistent use of condoms (d) To persuade then to adopt responsible sexual behaviour that decrease their risk of Transmithing or contracting HIV Methodology: I've yet identified, interventions in these regions (Thies/ KaolacK/Tambacounda/Saint-Louis), because of they are constitute as workissiter for protitutes I intend to chose peer educator groups to conduct information, education and communication (IEC) activities, and reinforce the condom distribution network. Results: I am sure that the target population (SOLDERS and Protitutes) Would use condom if the accesibility is very easy, and get a more responsible sexual behaviour even the IEC activities are well done, such as, they get one regular Partener. Conclusion: Like I was a solidier infected by HIV, I can tell you that there is a big danger in villager fas from the cities, like it is a taboo for woman of villages to do not be able to have a boy friend soldier. Donors agencies, the National Program on AIDS and NGO's figting againts the AIDS virus have to combinate their efforts for the prevention of the migrating Populations by faciliting carriyng out of strategies interventions and creating a synergy of action in IEC, Controlled STD, free condoms distributions I would like now to tell you that attontion must be given to a communication behariour change with demands interpersonal communication by using local dialects, through rural areas.
