Bridging the Gap: Conference Record [Abstract book, International Conference on AIDS (12th: 1998: Geneva, Switzerland)]

12th World AIDS Conference Abstracts 60091-60097 1017 say. Standard epidemiological procedures were performed when diagnosis HIV infection was confirmed. Results: A total of 3.430.979 sera have been tested during 1987-1995 years. All positive in ELISA samples (3774/0.11%) registered as falsh-positives. During this period 4 HIV-1-infected patients resided in region. All of them were infected outside the region and lived here very short time. In 1996-1997 27 HIV-1-infected patients were revealed. Among them 6 (22%) were infected by gomo- or geterosexual contacts, and 21 (78%) were injection drug users (IDUs). Among IDUs were 18 male and 3 female in age of 17-31 years old. All of them reported about the use of whole blood for drug prepare. 3 male visited either Ukraine Republic or Kaliningrad region where they took drugs together with local residents, before they became HIV positive. On the basic of epidemiological data were determined that 2 of them were the sourses for 9 IDUs. Besides, all of IDUs had antibodies to HCV for 3-5 month before found to be HIV infected. Conclusion: Our data evidence about hit of HIV- 1 in regional IDUs population. The increasing amount of new infected patients appearance will come from this risk group individuals. For IDUs presence of antibodies to HCV is significant for HIV infection. 60091 Seroprevalence of toxoplasma amongst HIV infected individuals in Pune, India Sanjay Pujari1, R.S. Wadia2, K.B. Grant3, S. Bhagat1. Dir Ector HIV Unit Ruby Hall Clinic, 1730 Sa Dashiv Peth 19 Ram Sham Apt S, Pune 411 030; 2Nuerologist Ruby Hall Clinic; 3Microbiologist Ruby Hall Clinic, Pune, India Objectives: To evaluate the prevalence of antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii in HIV infected individuals in Pune, India. Design: A prospective, controlled study from Feb.-May. 1997. Methods: Patients attending our HIV clinic over four months were recruited irrespective of their clinical status. Paired Sera were screened for toxoplasma antibodies using two Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) kits. Lymphocyte phenotyping were done by flow cytometry. HIV negative matched controls were recruited and toxoplasma serology determined. Results: A total of 79 subjects and controls were recruited. Seroprevalence of toxoplasma in HIV infected subjects and controls is 63.6% and 64.3% respectively (p - 0.05). Age, sex, immunological and clinical status did not have a significant impact on seroprevalence, however higher toxoplasma titres were seen amongst HIV infected subjects. Higher titres were also noted amongst symptomatic HIV infected patients. Conclusion: This is the highest reported toxoplasma seroprevalence rates in India. Without adequate prophylaxis and progressive immunodeficiency a large amount of HIV infected individuals will develop clinical toxoplasmosis. Routine screening for toxoplasma serology amongst HIV infected individuals is recommended so that prophylaxis can be instituted when immunosuppresion sets in. 60092 1The first HIV+ group in Estonia Vjatseslav Vassiljev. Narva Mnt. 48 Tallinn, Estonia Estonian HIV-Positive group ESPO was created in january 1992. At the first meeting there were only 12 participants By now, the number has increase upto 35. Most of them are HIV+. Only some close friends and members of families are in the group. We have not yet support from goverment. All work is voluntary: 1. Psyho-social support for members of the group; 2. Weekly meeting with charity dinners; 3. Work on the field of ANTI-AIDS propaganda: - lectures at schools and high scools - participation in TV-programs and in radio broadcasts - interviews and articles in media - participation in streetwork December, 1, May. 23, Rock-festival "Rock summer", Paldiski Rock-festival, etc. 4. Fighting for the rights of HIV+ and gay people; 5. Apart from psychological support, our group strives to provide material support to those members who cannot work due to their state of healh. ESPO has established itself as the more active self-help groups, with attendance at international meetings. 60094 HIV-2 infection seroprevalency evolution in Niamey, Niger Hamadou Ousseini. Faculte des Sciences de la Sante - B.P. 10890 Niamey, Niger Objectives: Study the HIV2 infection seroprevalency evolution in Niger by a retrospective study of the serological tests done over a three year period. Methods: All the 25,368 people tested during this periode are included in the study. They are blood donneurs, hospitalized patients, pregnant women, prostitutes, prisoners... All serums were tested in ELAVIA mixt, the positive ones in ELAVIA 1 and 2 and then by LAV blot 1 and/or 2. Conclusion: A constant progression of the HIV1 is noticed, a regular regression of the HIV2 and a substantiel stability of the HIV1 +2 association. The regular regression of the HIV2 can be explained by the less infectuosity and/or by a failure to adopt in 2 country recently infected by the HIV. S60095 Comparison of the condom use by the population that is seen on a anonymous testing site Valeria Saraceni1, E.E.M. Cortes2, J.L.L. Freitas3, S. Klajmic3, E.M. Souza3. SRua Cupertino Durao 219/B/404, Rio de Janeiro, RJ. 22441-030; 2Hospital Da Lagoa, Rio de Janeiro, RJ; 3 Hospital Rocha Maia, Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil Objectives: To compare the reference for the use of the male preservative by the people who came to a public hospital-based anonymous testing site for HIV, within 2 separate years. Methods: We reviewed, retrospectively, the records of the pre-HIV-testing counselling in the years of 1993 and 1997, in order to see the trends in condom use in the population, before they knew the results of their HIV tests. We divided them by sexual options, as we weren't looking for risk categories. Results: In 1993, we analyzed 1944 records. By then, 24.6% had homosexual or bisexual orientation and 75.4% referred to themselves as heterosexuals. In 1997, we reviewed 2249 records and found 15.64% and 84.36% of homo/bisexual and heterosexual orientation, respectively. Condom Use Sexual orientation Homo/Bisexual Heterosexual Never Always 1993 1997 1993 1997 32.64% 16.67% 25.73% 36.90% 49.80% 34.90% 15.28% 17.90% Conclusions: Among the homo/bisexual orientation, there was a decline in the group that never uses condoms and a rise in the always one, more expressive than in the heterosexual, as years go by. This reflects the greater concern and advertising directed to the male homosexual population in our environment, and reinforces the need to a more powerful intervention on the heterosexual group. 60096 Sexual activity and knowledge on AIDS: Investigation among students from the Police Academy in Rosario Maria F. Santa Fe; 2Brigadier Estanislao Lopez School, Rosario, SF; 3Retrovirus Unit Hospital Escuela Eva Peron, Gro. Baigorria, SF; 4J.J. Sotto Police Academy, Rosario, SF Argentina Objective: Inquire sexual activity and knowledge on AIDS in students from our Police Academy. Methods: Descriptive analysis of a voluntary, anonymous and self-administrated survey to 195 students from the Antonio Rodriguez Sotto Police Academy. Results: From these total students that answered the questionnaire, 186 (95.4%), manifested there have had sexual intercourse: 153 were males (78.5%) and 42 women, (21.5%). From the 186, twenty seven didn't answer the age of their first sexual intercourse, but they didn't have inconveniences in answering with whom (boy/girlfriend 157 (82.6%); prostitutes 15 (7.9%); and unknowns partners, 12 (6.3%), and with somebody of their own family 6 (3.2%). Concerning the amount of sexual partners 62 (38.5%) they have had only one couple; 48 (29.8%); two or three partners; the rest, 51 (31.7%), answered that they have had more than 4 different partners. Ten students (5.6%) admitted to have had homosexuals relations and nine bisexual (5%) From the 186 interviewed, 114 (61.6%) admitted that the use of condoms are useful in order to avoid HIV infection. Seven (3.6%) admitted occasionally taking of drugs. Conclusions: The analysis of the obtained results allows us to infer that this group has a great risk of having contact with. We want to highlight that 38.4% of them not consider useful condoms to decrease HIV risk contact. These results are not able to be extrapolated to general community. It is of ultimate importance to increase the AIDS information in Police Academies. 60097 Awareness amongst migrants workers at shipyard Nilkanthrai Vaishnav. AIDS Cell, Bhavnagar Blood Bank, "Alang House", Dimond Chowk, Bhavnagar - 364001, India Issue: Migrant population vulnerable to HIV/AIDS needs appropriate awarness & need for behavioural change. Project: At shipyard about 20,000 workers are at job in about 60 plots. At first phase, we made baseline array of about 10% of targeted population. Next phase, we use mass media by exabition, poster, videos & hoardings. We visited every plot twice & focous group were organise, and discussed HIV/AIDS, specially promoating STD & coundoms. Result: The project was well received & within six months visits of patients for STD at local dispensaries increased. Lession Learned: This programme was partially successful, but service project like STD clinic will be more beneficial to migrant workers. Results HIV1 HIV2 HIV1+2 First year 43.5% 34.71% 21.8% 2nd year 52.3% 22.22% 25.5% 3rd year 65.2% 14.13% 20.7%
