12th World AIDS Conference, Geneva 1998 Track Troikas (Co-Chairs) TRACK A: Basic Science 1. Giuseppe Pantaleo, Switzerland Specialised in Clinical Hematology and holds the position of Senior Investigator at the Swiss National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Lausanne. He is author and coauthor of more than 100 articles published in international scientific journals. Joined the Laboratory of Immunoregulation, NIAID, NIH, Bethesda, Maryland in 1988; and since then his work has focused on the delineation of the immunopathogenic mechanisms of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection. During the past two years he has also been working on delineating the virologic and immunologic events associated with primary HIV infection. 2. Mark Wainberg, Canada Specialised in microbiology and immunology. Currently Scientific Director of the Lady Davis Institute for Medical Research at Sir Mortimer Davis Jewish General Hospital in Montreal and President of the Canadian Association for HIV Research. Has been the recipient of numerous scientific awards and honors and ranks within the world's leading group of authors in terms of citation and impact. Has been involved in planning the scientific programs for 6 previous international AIDS conferences and was the Chair of Track A for the Vancouver Conference. 3. Edward Mbidde, Uganda Head of the Uganda Cancer Institute, Makerere Medical School, Kampala. Is particularly involved in HIV vaccine development (e.g., the clinical trials in Uganda) and has served on the WHO Global Program on AIDS Steering Committee for HIV vaccines. Was Chairman of the Scientific Program Committee of the IXth International Conference on AIDS and STDs in Africa, held in Kampala in December, 1995 and a Plenary Speaker in Vancouver. TRACK B: Clinical Science 1. Luc Perrin, Switzerland Has a background in internal medicine and viral immunopathology. Currently head of the clinical laboratory of virology at the Geneva University Hospital. A relative newcomer to HIV (after a career in malaria research), his research activities are focussed on acute HIV infection, the monitoring of HIV viremia and the prognostic value of virological parameters for clinical outcome. Has participated in and organised several international therapeutical trials in HIV infected patients. 2. Margaret Johnson, UK Specialises in thoracic medicine and is particularly interested in HIV antibody testing, clinical trials of antiretroviral agents and HIV infection in women. Currently Consultant Physician General Medicine, HIV/ AIDS and Clinical Director of HIV/AIDS at the Royal Free Hospital, NHS Trust, London. Is an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Virology at the Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine, University of London. Created both the Royal Free HIV/AIDS Service (one of the major treatment centres for HIV patients in the UK) and the first specific clinic in the UK for women with HIV. Is the author or co-author of over 80 publications on clinical aspects of HIV/AIDS. 3. Scott Hammer, USA Specialises in virology. Associate Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School. Director of the Research Virology Laboratory at the Infectious Disease Division of the New England Deaconess Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts. Has published extensively on HIV and conducted numerous clinical trials, most recently on combination antiretroviral therapies. Track Troikas
