Mo.D.1921 - Mo.D.1926 Monday, July 8, 1996 Project: In the past 3 years AIDS Prevention Carnival Campaigns were run using different educational strategies through mass media channels targeting strategically placed social groups. Carnival as a street festival involves an increase in the traffic of people and encourages more sexual freedom. All media channels ran campaigns that highlighted the promotion of condoms and the practice of safer sex.The campaign used nationally known artists and testimonies of people ihving with HIV/AIDS to form public opinion. After a short training, taxi drivers also participated in the Carnival campaign. They worked as direct contact social educators, and distributed condoms and information leaflets for their customers. Results: Campaigns were welcomed by the population. These campaigns created a new approach of AIDS prevention actions relating them to carnival time. It also sensitized other social sectors, which now accept their commitment to the fight against AIDS, and run campaigns during Carnival to promote the use of condoms. Lessons learned: AIDS prevention campaigns at specific periods and highly crowded places at popular street festivals can reach good results in terms of social mobilization snd encour agerment of preverntive behavior in face of AIDS.This is particularly more effective when these campaignrs use different strategies of approach the public, especially when they are run in the iseda. Since 1993 the AIDSCAP project in Brazil was involved with Claudia providing interv ews and te chnical assistance for thIe development of articles. In the beginning of 1995 Caudia decided to develop a campaign for HIV/AIDS prevention to target women in close collaboration with AIDSCAP/Project in Brazil. Since then each month Claudia is developing a systematic rrdia coverage in order to increase the perception of risk among women for HIV infection and STDs. Conclusions:.The rnr niaesector can pla y a major role on the prevention of AIDS; 2.3 e initiatve fror Claudi, is an example to be followed: 3. Great importance has been attached to the use of an easily accessible edb language. Project: Denmark is hopelessly behind in the feld of information technology when it comes to the storage of and searching for information about HIV/AIDS. In 1988 the Danish National Board of Health and the County of Funen launched a projlect, the aim ofwhich was to collect a database with information about all published Danish AIDS-information material. The project camre to nothing, however because it haid too many limitations attached. This new project, which was launched in 1994, uses a window-based database program, wh ch can be updated centrally based on an index designed and developed by AIDSINFO/FYN It can also be updated by the end user, with his or her own collection of informaitian.'She databaise iotsaina text, saurd, gi ah anrd aideo clips. Biomedicine, University of Pisa, Italy Objective: Owing to the predominant role of mass media n informn ine about AIDSs resulted from our previous surveys on AIDS related knowledge, attitudes and beh our, we have analyzed as newspapers faced the AIDS problem in Ital>y from 1982 to 99 Methods:Three daily papers widely spread in Italy: "la Repubblica "La Stampa ind "Corriere della Sera" were examined from 1982 to 1995 collect ir articles abot AIDS and memorizing the related information in a data base. In a first phase o the anals s the number of articles and its evolution during the time, the most important sulect and the more frequent words in titles and half titles were examined. Results: On the whole, the number of articles exceeded 13.500, with differer'',. 'rl years: from 3 in 1982 they increased till 1.680 in 1987; after a decrease fr o a great raise occurred in 1992, followed by a slight decline n 193-I '5.Ihe thr iew aa pers proceeded parallelly until 1987, with differences fur-therlyThe distnbution of atcs according to the subject showed that "sex" under every point of view (homo and heterosexuality prostitution, sexual violence, etc) was dealt in 79% of cases. drug n 5 he yearly distribution of these two subjects strongly differed since 1990, when art a s about "sex" started to increase, while for 'drug'' we did not find a significant trend. fhe ost frequent words found in titles and half-titles, were related to the most important sublet, and the epidemiology, but other expressions as death", " risk' to kll", "fear' alarm, wert rather frequent, pointing out the often alarming tone of the AIDS related news. Conclusions: The press coverage of AIDS-related tops h as been very large since 985,. with the absolute maximun in 1987, when we also observed a mrked mcease of fear and prejudices. The often alarming tone and the rather frequent inaccuracy in the articles, besides the very important role of press in AIDS information, suggest the foundatione a Permanent Observatory of press about AIDS pointing out misconceptions and trying to correct them.
