Drinking and Driving In Canada it is a criminal offense to operate a motor vehicle, vessel or aircraft while impaired by alcohol or a drug; or with more than 80 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood. (.08%) It is also an offense for the operator of a motor vehicle, vessel or aircraft to refuse to provide a breath or blood sample for testing. Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Visitor Rebates The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a seven per cent tax charged on most goods and services sold or provided in Canada. As a visitor to Canada, you will pay the tax on most of your purchases. Under the Visitor Rebate Program, non-resident visitors may qualify for a foreign tourist rebate of the tax for short-term accommodation and goods that you take home (up to $500 CAD). Refund application forms (Tax Refund Application for Visitors) will be available at Conference Information Desks, Canada Customs offices, Canadian Embassies and Consulates, most Tourism Information Centres, participating Canadian Duty Free Shops as well as some hotels and retail stores. Liquor Stores Spirits can only be purchased at BC Liquor Stores. Wine and beer can be bought at liquor stores, as well as some private beer and wine stores. Grocery stores cannot sell any alcoholic beverages.The use of credit cards to purchase liquor is prohibited by legislation. BC law prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages to anyone less than 19 years of age; you may be asked to produce photo identification if you are under 30. Prices shown include taxes. Local Newspapers The two main daily newspapers are the Vancouver Sun and the Province, offering local and regional news. Canada's national newspaper, The Globe and Mail provides national and international news on a daily basis. The Georgia Straight is Vancouver's arts and entertainment weekly. The July 4, 1996 issue contains complete information about the Conference Cultural Program. The Georgia Straight is available free-of-charge at all Conference sites and in restaurants and retail stores throughout Vancouver. Local Transit In addition to the Conference shuttles, BC Transit offers regularly scheduled public transportation. BC Transit's bus fleet criss-crosses Vancouver and covers over I 800 square kilometres. Many routes connect with SkyTrain and SeaBus. Buses operate seven days a week, and BC Transit offers regular service on the busiest routes from 05:00 to 02:00 and late night "Owl" service on some downtown - suburban routes until 04:20. SkyTrain, a completely automated light rapid transit system, offers direct, efficient service between downtown Vancouver and Surrey. It follows a scenic, elevated, 29-kilometre (I18 mile) route with 20 stations along the way. All SkyTrain stations except Granville, have elevators and each train is wheelchair accessible. Delegates can board the SkyTrain at the "Stadium" station for a quick ride to the VTCC for afternoon sessions. SeaBus is a unique, passenger-only, wheelchair accessible ferry service that connects Vancouver with the North Shore via a scenic 12-minute harbour crossing. SeaBus links the SkyTrain and buses at the Waterfront Station in downtown Vancouver and provides connections to local bus service at Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver SeaBus service operates daily, every 15 to 30 minutes. Fares are the same for SkyTrain, SeaBus or buses. During peak periods, fares correspond to the number of zone boundaries crossed. In off-peak times, riders can travel across any zone boundaries for the single zone fare. Cash Fare: During Peak Times (Mon - Fri before 09:30 and from 15:00- 18:30) I ZONE 2 ZONES 3 ZONES Adult $1.50 $2.25 $3.00 Cash Fare: Off-Peak Times (Mon-Fri 09:30 - 15:30 and after 18:30 as well as Sat/Sun and Holidays) ALL ZONES $1.50 Day Passes Mon-Fri ALL ZONES Adult $4.50 You may pay your fare in cash (exact coin fare, as operators do not carry change) or by showing your pass or transfer when you board. If you pay by cash and wish to transfer to another vehicle during your trip, ask the driver for a transfer at the time you board. Your transfer is good for 90 minutes of travel. There are BC Transit passes available for sale on-site in the Delegate Services area at BC Place. This $14 (CAD) pass, valid from Friday, July 5 through Thursday, July II, will provide Conference participants unlimited travel on the local transit system including buses, the SkyTrain, and the SeaBus. Delegates are encouraged to purchase these passes to increase their flexibility to move around the city on their own.Transit schedules will be available where the passes are sold.
