11/ CONFERENCE FACTS XI International on AIDS Vancouver July 7-12, 1996 Background on Conference Series * Each year for the past 10 years, the international AIDS community has met to exchange information at an international Conference which brings together 10,000 to 13,000 scientists, health care providers, persons with HIV/AIDS, educators, politicians and public health workers. Beginning in 1994, the conferences convene every two years. * From 1985 to 1994, the International Conferences on AIDS were held in Atlanta, Paris, Washington, Stockholm, Montreal, San Francisco, Florence, Amsterdam, Berlin, and Yokohama (1994) respectively. The XI International Conference on AIDS * The conference is being organised by the XI International Conference on AIDS Society, a non-profit, charitable society set up by four local researchers: Dr Michael L. Rekart, Dr. Martin T. Schechter, Dr. Michael V. O'Shaughnessy, and Dr. Julio SG Montaner. * The theme of the Vancouver Conference is "One World, One Hope" * Supporting Organisations: Canadian Association for HIV Research (CAHR) Global Network of People Living with HIV (GNP+) International AIDS Society (IAS) International Council of AIDS Service Organisations (ICASO) United Nations Joint Programme on AIDS (UNAIDS) Opening Speakers from Previous International Conferences on AIDS * Traditionally, heads of state of the host country and at least one other country especially touched by the epidemic are in attendance. * Past heads of state in attendance include: George Bush, US Vice-President (Washington, 1987) ingvar Carlsson, Prime Minister of Sweden (Stockholm, 1988) The Right Honourable Brian Mulroney, Prime Minister, Canada (Montreal, 1989) His Excellency Kenneth Kaunda, President of the Republic of Zambia (Montreal, 1989) Francesco Cossiga, President of the Republic of Italy (Florence, 1991) Hon.Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, President of the Republic of Uganda, (Florence, 1991) His Imperial Highness The Crown Prince (Yokohama, 1994) Tomiichi Murayama, Prime Minister of Japan (Yokohama, 1994)
