Vancouver ‘96: Official Newsletter of the XI International Conference on AIDS, no. 1[International Conference on AIDS (11th: 1996: Vancouver, Canada)]
Innovations at the 1996 Conference WHILE MANY TRADITIONAL ELEMENTS STILL REMAIN, CONFERENCE ORGANISERS ANNOUNCE INNOVATIVE ADDITIONS TO CONFERENCE AND SCIENTIFIC PROGRAM Health Insurance Comprehensive health insurance for the duration of the Conference is included in the registration fee for Regular Delegates, Students, and Scholarship Recipients. This health insurance includes coverage for people living with HIV/AIDS as well as all other delegates who experience an unforeseen illness or accident. This health insurance package contributes to our effort to make this event as inclusive as possible of all participants: Blinded Review For the first time, delegates submitting abstracts will be asked to submit two versions: an original (plus copies) with the entire form completed, (including the names of the authors), and copies of the original with the names of the authors removed. These blinded versions will be sent to the reviewers to ensure that all material is reviewed purely for its scientific quality and for its contribution to the overall program. Juy6Juy7Jly8Jl 9Jl 0 uyII uy1 Pathways In addition to the four program tracks used in past Conferences, in Vancouver we've decided to add what we've called Pathways. Three themes or subject areas will weave themselves throughout the four tracks, allowing participants to follow their subject of interest through discussions of basic science, clinical science, epidemiology public health, and social science. These Pathways include the topics of Women and -HIV; Living with HIV; and Development and HIV. Practical Training Sessions In addition to being a forum for intellectual debate and critical analysis, this Conference will also offer sessions and workshops that will allow delegates to learn practical skills. These skills may include the medical treatment of people living with HIV/AIDS.They could also include fundraising, managing volunteers, writing, reading, and understanding research protocols, laboratory skills, and other practical subjects. SFormal and Informal Interaction of Delegates Because the interaction of delegates with one another is so important, we have added several types of session formats that will maximize this interaction. For example, Meet the Expert sessions will allow small groups to meet with those who are especially skilled in specific fields. Opportunities will also be available for individuals with specific interests to meet informally in the evening and at other times outside of the formal program. Young Investigator Awards * The ability to sustain our research efforts is critical to our success in overcoming HIV/AIDS. And new ideas are necessary to continue to approach the pandemic from a variety of different directions. That's why Conference organisers have chosen to highlight and reward the work of young researchers in the field. Each track will reward the outstanding work of investigators under the age of 35.
