Innovative Plenaries Promise Diversity of Views at XI International Conference on AIDS [International Conference on AIDS (11th: 1996: Vancouver, Canada)]

04/09/96 TUE 19:23 FAX 604 688 1875 XI INTL CONO AIDS - 2 -By incorporating the One World; One Hope Lecture series in the body of the Plenary Program, the Organising Committee has deliberately elected to highlight the positive achievements that have taken place in HIV/AIDS research, clinical testing, epidemiology and behavioral science since the last International AIDS Conference in 1994. "We are determined to eventually defeat this epidemic. In doing so, we must constantly adapt to changing currents of thought. In selecting our Plenary Speakers we have made a strategic decision to introduce new faces in order to encourage those whose ideas are thought-provoking and who represent the cutting-edge," said the Conference Co-Chairs. "We believe our selection of Plenary Speakers and the introduction of the One World, One Hope Lecture Series will help lift the cloud of doom-and-gloom which darkened the outcome of previous International AIDS Conferences." The Vancouver Conference has received a record 5,626 research abstracts from 125 countries- the most ever received in the International Conference on AIDS series with the exception of.the 1993 Berlin Conference which did not limit each presenting author to one abstract only. Following the results of a three-day meeting in March of the 64-member Scientific Program Committee, invitations have been sent to 500 people from around the world to speak at the Conference. Additionally, members of the committee recommended which topics will be featured at 132 different sessions and symposia that will occur throughout the Conference Program. - 30.
