The Immunocompromised State and Opportunistic Infections [International Conference on AIDS (11th: 1996: Vancouver, Canada)]
XI International Vancouver 7 Conference July 7-12, 1996 on AIDS Ofiia ellite -yposum he International Conference on AIDS has served as a timely forum for the analysis and dissemination of new information about Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV- 1) and the opportunistic infections that are the hallmark of the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. After a period of considerable frustration among physicians, other caregivers, and patients, it is now apparent that there are important new approaches to the management of the underlying viral disease and its opportunistic bacterial, fungal, and viral complications. The immunocompromised state and its evolution has been the subject of intense study and there is evolving knowledge about the phenomenon of long-term survival. One of the most gratifying developments has been in the area of preventing serious opportunistic complications. Quality of life appears enhanced and, most gratifyingly, the prophylaxis of some opportunistic infections is associated with improved survival. Our meeting must be selective, but its purpose will be to review some important new information on the immunocompromised state associated with AIDS and the management of opportunistic infections. Welcome to Vancouver, Canada! Sincerely yours, Lowell S. Young, MD Director, KIAID This symposium is sponsored by an unrestricted educational grant from Pfizer Inc AN The symposium will be held in the MacKenzie Room of the Waterfront Centre Hotel from 7:00 to 9:30 PM on Tuesday, July 9, 1996 6:15 PM 7:00 7:05 7:30 7:55 Reception Malaspina Room Opening Remarks Lowell S.
