Final Program and Oral Abstracts [International Conference on AIDS (8th: 1992: Amsterdam, Netherlands)]

PROGRAM LISTING OPENING CEREMONY The Opening Ceremony of the VIII International Conference on AIDS/Ill STD World Congress will take place on Sunday, 19 July, at 16.30 in the Hollandhal of the RAI Conference Centre. Officials of The Netherlands, the City of Amsterdam, and Harvard University will welcome the delegates, and Conference sponsors and Co-sponsors will give brief messages. The principal address will be delivered by Ms. Eka Esu-Williams, President of the Society for Women and AIDS in Africa and Professor at the University of Calabar, Nigeria. Ms. Esu-Williams will provide an overview of global developments in HIV/AIDS over the past year, as well as the societal responses to these developments. GLOBAL MEETINGS On the opening night of the Conference, the Community Liaison Committee will host the first global meeting on access to HIV information, care, and treatment. Based on the model of a New England Town Meeting, village meeting, or Talking Circle, the gathering will provide Conference delegates with the opportunity to share all views on the crucial issues of responsibility in the epidemic, the lack of global resources, the uneven access to health care and information, and the goals of all involved in this global effort. By sharing and talking in this facilitated setting, we can begin to form a common agenda for uniting the world in its response to AIDS. We anticipate that people will take this opportunity to speak openly, entering into an unprecedented discussion, the start of a new global dialogue. A follow-up meeting will be scheduled on Thursday night, to hear back from the many organizations that will hold their own meetings during the course of the Conference. Just as the first meeting provided an opportunity to air our views, the second will give us the chance to make concrete suggestions for action during the period between the Amsterdam and Berlin (1993) International Conferences. We hope that you will join others from throughout the world. This historic opportunity can be the beginning of A World United Against AIDS. INTERNA TIONAL L.I.F.E. * PRIZE A WARD The L.I.F.E. Prize is an annual award designed to provide increased exposure for the most meaningful AIDS-related studies published in medical literature.
