New Call for Abstracts and Registration [International Conference on AIDS (8th: 1992: Amsterdam, Netherlands)]
Invitational Messages Neil Rudenstine, President, Harvard University Harvey Fineberg, Dean, Harvard School of Public Health Daniel Tosteson, Dean, Harvard Medical School W e are very pleased to join our colleagues from the Netherlands in inviting you to Amsterdam for the VIII International Conference on AIDS/Ill STD World Congress. The Conference has been moved from Boston to Amsterdam to ensure the full and unimpeded exchange of ideas, experience, and information about AIDS among people of all nationalities. We now share a collective responsibility to help forge the new global AIDS agenda. To do this, we must bring to Amsterdam the world's best scientific expertise and experience in preventing HIV infection and caring for the affected. Together, through presentations, discussions, and meetings, we can create the critical energy that will help move forward-at all levels-the fight against AIDS. We believe strongly that the 1992 Conference can be a vital part of a creative renewal of individual, community, national, and global efforts against the HIV/AIDS pandemic. Coming to Amsterdam reflects a commitment and a willingness to play a part in the crossing of borders-geographical, disciplinary, and societal-to teach, to learn, and to share. The world expects this of us all. It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the VIII International Conference on AIDS/III STD World Congress. The unique partnership between the Harvard AIDS Institute and the Dutch Foundation-AIDS Conference 1992 embodies the Conference theme, "A World United Against AIDS." Since the beginning of the AIDS pandemic, the Dutch have been deeply involved with the many issues raised by this disease. It has been our particular concern to show great solidarity with HIV-infected people and with people with AIDS. Within the context of understanding and commitment, we have worked diligently to develop an integrated national policy on AIDS control, including prevention and education efforts, provision of proper care for HIV-infected persons, careful consideration of the legal and ethical issues surrounding the disease, and a well-balanced program of biomedical and social science research. In addition to our own national policy, the Netherlands also contributes to AIDS prevention in developing countries and eastern Europe. Perhaps even more important to the success of the Conference is the fact that the Netherlands and its capital city Amsterdam have a long history of tolerance and of solving problems through consensus. We believe that this legacy will serve the Conference well as we search to reach our common goals by fully sharing information, carefully assessing the societal impact and response to the pandemic, and contributing to global understanding and solidarity.
