New Call for Abstracts and Registration [International Conference on AIDS (8th: 1992: Amsterdam, Netherlands)]
Instructions for Key Word Coding A World United Against AIDS VIII International Conference on AIDS/ILL STD World Congress Amsterdam, the Netherlands 19-24 July 1992 Why use key words? We use key words to index abstracts for quick reference in the Abstract Volume of the VIII International Conference on AIDS/IIl STD World Congress. What are key words? Key words (like "dapsone") or phrases (like "transmission, blood products") identify and crossreference abstracts according to their content. By recording the appropriate key words, you help readers of the Abstract Volume locate your research. How should I choose which key words to use? The following guidelines may be helpful: 1. Choose key words that describe the major subjects covered in your abstract. 2. Choose specific key words. Listing words like "AIDS" or "HIV" does not help the reader find relevant abstracts. Broad topics like "heterosexuals" are subdivided (e.g., "heterosexuals, prevalence.") 3. Questions about coding geographic regions arise frequently. If your abstract refers to a specific geographical region or country, please include that region or country as a key word to help in identification. For the first time, the key words include every country in the world. See geographic regions and the end of the list. What should I do with this list? After you complete your abstract, select a number of words or phrases which best describe the content of your abstract. Next, look through the List of Key Words to locate the key words you selected. Type in the numerical codes, not the key words themselves, in the boxes provided on the Abstract Information Form. Remember, use black or dark ink, and be sure type stays in the boxes provided. You should type in the codes of at least three (3) and no more than six (6) key words. What should I do if one of my choices is not listed? Please look through the list carefully. Often, you will find other words that describe your abstract equally well. You may also find your key word choice listed in a different form (e.g., "cancers" instead of "cancer.") If this is the case, please select the word that most closely matches your choice. What should I do if no word on the list describes an important concept in my abstract? Since the printing of the List of Key Words, new topics may have become relevant. If no word on the list comes close to describing an important concept in your abstract, you may write in a new key word in the space provided on the Abstract Information Form. To do so, you must select the code for a write-in ("00") and type it in one of the six (6) boxes on the Abstract Information Form. If the code "00" does not appear in one of these boxes, your written choice will not be read by the computer. xix
