Issue/Problem: Introducing condom promotion into schools attended by teenagers is controversial given general
cultural and religious sensitivities and specific concerns about encouraging sexual activity.
Description of Project: Our AIDS Service Organization collaborated with school trustees to conduct a KABP
survey identifying baseline behavior and needs, quietly circulated results of previous studies to trustees and
community leaders, and successfully encouraged a group of parents to actually propose the campaign to the Board
of a pilot school.
Results: One year later, reported sexual activity levels in the pilot institution match those in other schools,
but condom use for first time sexual activity is 20% higher.
Lessons Learned: Participants will learn about one successful strategy used to introduce condoms into the
school system, including how they might deal with cultural/religious sensitivities and how results can be
measured to help ensure replication of the project.
