New Call for Abstracts and Registration [International Conference on AIDS (8th: 1992: Amsterdam, Netherlands)]
Introduction In July of 1992, ten thousand of us from over one hundred twenty-five countries will arrive in Amsterdam for the VIII International Conference on AIDS/III STD World Congress. As we gather, we will inevitably be confronted with the formidable problems and considerable losses of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. At the same time, however, the Conference will provide us an unequalled opportunity, an extraordinary chance to review our accomplishments, to assess our failures, to consolidate our energy and commitment, and to define our strategies for fighting the HIV/AIDS pandemic in the future. The 1992 International AIDS Conference is being organized as a true international partnership. Working with the broadest ever representation of colleagues worldwide, we are planning a Conference of the highest scientific quality that represents and addresses all aspects of the international AIDS crisis. We believe this multinational and multidisciplinary approach is not a matter of convenience, but of urgent necessity: AIDS is a global crisis and demands a global response. The unique organizational structure and process of the Harvard-Amsterdam meeting have prompted us to reassess the International Conference, to review its mission and purpose, and to seek to develop a meeting that is as productive, educational, and effi cient as possible for all participants. We hope to build on the successes of pastConferences, while reshaping the 1992 meeting to meet the emerging challenges and needs of the pandemic in the 1990s. The Conference will therefore feature the following innovations: * A more diverse planning process: For the first time, the large majrity of Program Committee members are international, and the International Steering Committee now incorporates representatives of nongovernmental and community-based organizations, people with AIDS, and people from more nations than ever before. * More focus on critical issues: The program has been identification of critical questions and issues process, we will be able to target precious Conference time on topics at each track feels merit concentrated attention. * More explicit attention to prevention: The scientfic basis for prevenon, conceptual frameworks for social/behavioral research, operational research, and the experience of preventionprogramswill all contribute to acceleration of global learning in this vital area. * More up-to-date information: The Conferene wil now featur e highlighting research developments which ha ecrred sn sb sion of abstracts, allowing presentation of the m t timely r results. * More opportunities for discussion and critical ~ ss Se o will be organized to assist delegates in assessing and analyzing ormatn pre sented at the Conference, placing it in the broader context of accumu lated knowledge about HIV/AIDS.
