New Call for Abstracts and Registration [International Conference on AIDS (8th: 1992: Amsterdam, Netherlands)]
meeting of the III STD World Congress and the VIII International Conference on AIDS marks a historical juncture in our efforts to coordinate worldwide control of the spread of HIV infection. This connection is direct and meaningful: in most countries, sexual contact is the principle mode of transmission of HIV, and it has been clearly shown that the risk of such sexual transmission is enhanced by the concomitant presence of other sexually transmitted infections. Sexually transmitted diseases represent a major health threat throughout the world, and their complications have a significant impact on society. These considerations, combined with the shortage of global health care resources and an increased awareness of common interven tion strategies, have led many nations and national and international organizations to begin integrating HIV and STD prevention and control programs. By joining the primary international meetings of the two disciplines, we hope to spur this process, thus increasing our efficiency and success in combatting not only AIDS but all STDs. The International AIDS Society The International AIDS Society (IAS) is composed of physicians, scientists, and other individuals dedicated to advancing our understanding of the HIV epidemic. The IAS selects sites for each International AIDS Conference, and works as a co-sponsor to maintain the Conference as a vital forum for information ex change in the many disciplines involved in the epidemic. As an international organization, the IAS seeks to improve the recognition that the HIV epidemic is a growing problem for all regions and peoples of the world. To this end, the IAS helps support Conference attendance by developing country delegates and is also increasingly committed to the sponsorship of regional conferences, as well. Additionally, the IAS has played an active role in addressing issues which threaten the free exchange of scientific information, such as HIV-directed travel restrictions. The International AIDS Society, still a young organization, hopes to continue to build an active membership which best represents the commitment we feel to HIV research.
