Background International Conferences on AIDS Since it was first convened in Atlanta, GA, in 1985, the International Conference on AIDS has been the locus and the catalyst for much of the unprecedented collaboration with which the scientific community has responded to the challenge of AIDS. At each of the Conferences, a rich cross-fertilization of ideas has led to rapid dissemination of vital information, as well as renewed energy and new insights for participants. As a result, the Conference has grown from a gathering of a few hundred discussing a small number of papers in 1985, to the expected 10,000 participants at the VIII International Conference. In light of the evolution of the AIDS pandemic, the organizers of the 1992 International Conference have made a strong commitment to an inclusive, world-wide approach. In particular, the Conference hopes to intensify the ongoing collaboration between participants from developing and developed nations in the areas of HIV/AIDS research, education, and policy. To reflect this approach, we have adopted the theme of "A World United Against AIDS." Within this overall framework, the Conference will incorporate an international perspective in four areas of endeavor: Basic Science, Clinical Science and Care, Epidemiology, and Social Impact and Response. Particular care is being taken to develop an innovative program that provides multiple opportunities not only for the presentation of new information, but also for discussion, critical analysis, and assessment of this material. In this way, we believe we can make the program truly informative, educational, and fruitful for participants from all disciplines and all parts of the globe. III STD World Congress The First STD World Congress was held in Puerto Rico in 1981, the Second in Paris, France in 1986. While both meetings addressed the full range of STDs, AIDS was a significant topic of discussion at both, from initial reports of the disease at the First Congress to full awareness of the global magnitude of the pandemic at the Second.
