City of Amsterdam Cosmopolitan and colorful, Amsterdam is among the most frequently chosen destinations in Europe. The unique blend of past and present that appeals to vacationers also creates a delightful setting for meetings of any type, as does its history of acceptance, tolerance, and openness. The city, which is famous for its symmetrical rings of canals crossed by over 1,000 picturesque bridges, also contains 7,000 historical buildings and forty-two museums including the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. In addition, there are excellent shopping facilities, numerous theaters, cozy bars and pubs, and a wide variety of good restaurants. Passport and Visa Information The Netherlands has no restrictions on entry by people with HIV/AIDS. A valid passport is required for entry into the Netherlands. No visa is required for travellers with passports from the European Communities, the United States, Canada, or Australia. Visas may be required for those with passports from other countries. For specific information, please contact the Dutch Embassy nearest you at least six weeks prior to your departure for the Netherlands. Foreign Exchange Several banking facilities will be available in the RAI Centre to exchange foreign currency. These facilities will be open during regular Conference hours. Credit Cards All participating Conference hotels and most restaurants and shops accept major credit cards. It is advisable to carry a form of photo identification. Insurance It is highly recommended that all Conference participants carry the proper travel and health insurance, as the VIII International Conference on AIDS/III STD World Congress cannot accept liability for any accidents or injuries that may occur at the meeting. Climate and Clothing In July, the average temperature in Amsterdam is about 17-20 degrees C. (63-70 degrees F.)
