VIII International Conference on AIDS/III STD World Conference Launched at Critical Moment in HIV/AIDS Pandemic [International Conference on AIDS (8th: 1992: Amsterdam, The Netherlands)]

VIII INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON AIDS/III STD WORLD CONFERENCE LAUNCHED AT CRITICAL MOMENT IN HIV/AIDS PANDEMIC -- More than 9,000 delegates to attend 1992 Harvard-Amsterdam Conference -- - Chair Jonathan Mann calls for new strategies for global action against the AIDS epidemic -- The VIII International Conference on AIDS/III STD World Congress marks a critical week in the history of the HIV/AIDS pandemic, say organizers of the 1992 Harvard-Amsterdam meeting, Harvard University and the Dutch Foundation-AIDS Conference 1992. "The global effort against HIV/AIDS has reached a dangerous impasse," said Conference Chair Jonathan Mann. "A realistic analysis reveals that the gap between the expanding HIV/AIDS epidemic and lagging national and international response is increasing rapidly, leaving the world more vulnerable to the spread of HIV." Current global approaches have underestimated both the scope of the pandemic and how to contend with it, according to Dr. Mann. "We know that we have the capacity to control AIDS and to care for all affected," said Dr. Mann. During the past ten years, we have gained enormous technical knowledge and learned effective methods of HIV prevention. Occurring at this time, the 1992 Harvard-Amsterdam AIDS Conference is our opportunity to create a new, creative, decisive agenda for progress against HIV/AIDS." More than 9,000 AIDS experts are attending the meeting from over 125 countries worldwide. Dr. Joost Ruitenberg, Conference Co-Chair, noted that the Conference has been organized to reflect and increase understanding of the global nature of the pandemic. Abstracts submitted from developing countries increased significantly over the previous year's meeting in Florence, with a 72% increase in those submitted from Africa and a 90% increase from Asia. "The developing world is increasingly bearing the burden of the HIV/AIDS pandemic," said Dr. Ruitenberg, "accounting for approximately 80% of the world's HJV infections. We have created a program to help make progress in regions hardest hit by HIV/AIDS." Participation from the United States has also increased since the Florence meeting. More than 3,200 U.S. researchers are attending the Harvard-Amsterdam Conference, compared with 2861 in Florence.
