APPENDIX 2 CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL A Comprehensive Resource The National AIDS Clearinghouse is a comprehensive information service for people working in HIV and AIDS including public health professionals, educators, social service workers, attorneys, human resource managers, and employers. These professionals work in a variety of settings such as State AIDS programs, community-based organizations, service organizations, businesses, and associations. As a service of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, Centers for Disease Control (CDC) the Clearinghouse collects, classifies, and distributes up-to-date information and provides expert assistance to HIV- and AIDSprevention professionals. The Clearinghouse is a central source for indepth information about HIV and AIDS services and resources. Information Services An experienced team of reference specialists with a broad knowledge of AIDS organizations and materials can access a wealth of information about HIV and AIDS. Call the Clearinghouse toll free at 1-800-458-5231, and these specialists will answer inquiries, make referrals, and help locate publications pertaining to HIV infection and AIDS. Spanish- and French-speaking specialists are also available. Reference specialists use computerized databases to put callers in touch with organizations that provide HIV- and AIDS-related services and materials: * The Resources Database contains descriptions of more than 15,000 organizations that provide HIV- and AIDS-related services and resources. * The Educational Materials Database includes a collection of information on more than 8,000 hard-to-find HIV- and AIDSrelated educational materials. * The AIDS School Health Education Database is produced by CDC's Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, Division of Adolescent and School Health. It offers citations and descriptions of educational resources for professionals to use in educating children and youth about HIV infection and AIDS. * The Funding Database describes funding opportunities for community-based HIV and AIDS service organizations. It includes information about the application process, deadlines, and eligibility requirements. 185 Materials From the Clearinghouse You can obtain materials from the National AIDS Clearinghouse that can help keep you up-to-date with scientific findings, CDC guidelines, and changing trends of the HIV epidemic. Copies of selected reprints from CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report series, the HIVIAIDS Surveillance report, and other educational materials are available. You may also obtain free brochures and posters, and low-cost videotapes for use in HIV prevention activities. Some of these materials are available in Spanish. Orders for multiple copies of publications can be placed by calling the Clearinghouse's toll-free voice or deafaccess line. Networking The Clearinghouse networks with individuals and organizations working with women; adolescents; racial, ethnic, and sexual minorities; and other special populations to facilitate the exchange of information about HIV- and AIDSrelated services, educational materials, funding opportunities, and clinical trials. Outreach staff will work with you on a one-to-one basis to discuss the specific information needs of your organization and those you serve. Electronic Bulletin Board The Clearinghouse's Electronic Bulletin Board is a free computerized network that facilitates information exchange among AIDS service providers. Through the Electronic Bulletin Board, you can keep up-to-date with AIDS-related news, participate in online discus sions about current issues, send and receive electronic mail, and
