APPENDIX 1 NATIONAL AIDS HOTLINE 1-800-342-AIDS (1-800-342-2437) INFORMATION * EDUCATION * REFERRALS 24 HOURS/DAY * 365 DAYS/YEAR The National AIDS Hotline Services The National AIDS Hotline is a toll-free service of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Public Health Service, Centers for Disease Control (CDC). The Hotline provides callers with confidential information and referrals and can arrange for the mailing of free, written materials. Callers to the National AIDS Hotline number, 1-800-342-AIDS (342-2437), are able to speak with Information Specialists who can answer their questions about HIV infection and AIDS, and provide appropriate referrals to meet their individual needs. Information Specialists at the National AIDS Hotline receive specialized training on HIV/AIDS information, communication skills, and identification of appropriate local or national resources. Information Specialists use a computerized system to access the referral database of approximately 10,000 local and national organizations. All services of the National AIDS Hotline are free and confidential. Callers who want general information about HIV infection or AIDS, or who may have very sensitive or personal questions are able to speak with specially trained staff who will listen to their concerns, and provide information and referral services which meet their individual needs. Spanish Service: 1-800-344-SIDA Spanish-speaking callers may call 1-800-344 -SIDA (344-7432) between the hours of 8am and 2am Eastern Time to speak with native Spanishspeaking Information Specialists. This service is available 7 days a week. A recorded message, in Spanish, with basic information about HIV infection and prevention is available between 2am and 8am Eastern Time. TTY/TDD Access: 1-800-AIDS-TTY Deaf callers who have access to a TTY (teletypewriter) machine may dial 1-800-AIDSTTY (243-7889) to reach Information Specialists who are skilled in English and American Sign Language (ASL). The TTY/TDD lines are staffed between 10am and 10pm Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. During the weekend, and between the hours of 10pm and 10am weekdays, callers receive a pre-recorded message informing them about HIV infection, AIDS, and methods to reduce the risk of transmission.
