behavior, and clients served at TB and STD clinics are also screened for high-risk behavior. Community awareness programs take the form of videos, posters, printed information, public service announcements, and other media produced in native languages. Booths are sponsored at many Native American festivals, rodeos, fairs and pow-wows to reach a broad range of the community with AIDS information. Seminars for educators have trained teachers, administrators and school board members in basic AIDS prevention education. In addition, IHS supports AIDS training in schools and curriculum development. Ongoing Knowledge, Attitude, and Behavior surveys assess the level of AIDS awareness and behavior change as a result of the programs in place. In addition, IHS absorbs the cost of providing AIDS drugs and treatments for seropositive individuals served through the IHS health-care delivery system. Currently no IHS HIV money is available extramurally in the form of grants or contracts. The IHS is stretched to meet its internal needs with the present allocations.
