ADAMHA's three institutes are involved in specific HIV-related intramural and extramural research programs enumerated below. The ADAMHA FY '91 HIV appropriated budget explains how monies are divided between the institutes: ADAMHA FY '91 HIV Funding Mental Health: a. Research.......................................... $ 69,835,000 b. Research Management & Support..................... 3,518,000 c. Professional/Medical Education....................... 2,900,000 NIMH TOTAL..........................................$ 76,253,000 Drug Abuse: a. Program Management & Support..................... $ 909,000 ADAMHA TOTAL.......................................$ 236,504,000 ADAMHA extramural funding is mostly in the form of support of research and research training (grants), and acquisition awards (contracts). Applications for research grants and other discretionary assistance mechanisms are submitted to the Division of Research Grants (DRG) of the NIH. Grant applications go through a dual-level review system, comprised of peer review by scientists working in the area of expertise and a National Advisory Council of the ADAMHA Institute that makes the award. Contract proposals are submitted directly to the Institute responsible for the solicitation. Review of contract projects involves several stages, including scientific peer review, and evaluation of issues relevant to the awarding ADAMHA Institute. Major ADAMHA extramural funding mechanisms are: research grants, research and development contracts, research training awards, and cooperative agreements. Following is a description of each Instiute's programs related to AIDS/HIV, as well as information about extramural funding areas and contact names for additional information. ADAMHA encourages research applications which address issues of cross-Institute interest, taking several of the areas described under separate Institute programs into account. National Institute on Drug Abuse The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) has initiated a range of basic scientific research related to AIDS/HIV. Biomedical research probes issues related to: the effect of abused drugs and therapeutic agents used in drug abuse treatment on the immune system and the interaction of these effects with HIV; immunological factors influencing the vulnerability of drug-abusing minority populations to HIV; separating other manifestations of the drug-abusing lifestyle from the primary effects of drugs and HIV. Clinical studies examining immunologic effects of abused drugs examine: specific drugs and patterns of abuse; medical conditions and illnesses associated with drug abuse; pharmacotherapeutic agents used for HIV and drug abuse treatments; biological and/or genetic factors known to be involved in drug abuse; and environmental factors such as nutrition and exposure to toxic agents. Behavioral research focuses on: behavior change as the primary means of prevention; effective and appropriate intervention strategies; specific research targeting adolescents who use or have tried illegal drugs; and "real life" patterns of drug users related to types of drugs used and routes of drug use, as well ~1991 ASAP Reproduction By Permission Only 65 ~199 ASP Rerodctio ByPermssin Ony 6 F
