NIOSH activities related to Goal 4 focus on strengthening international capacities to prevent HIV infection: providing scientific, managerial and technical assistance to WHO, PAHO, other countries, and other international organizations; and sponsoring or co-sponsoring international workshops and conferences with multilateral/bilateral agencies to exchange information and plan appropriate strategies for future efforts. Martin, Ph.D. 404/639-0983 National Center for Health Statistics The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) participates in the following programs related to CDC's AIDS/HIV-operational goals. NCHS FY 1991 appropriated AIDS/HIV funding is $2,688,475. NCHS programs relate to two of CDC's four AIDS/HIV goals. Activities related to Goal 1 focus on surveillance, including: collecting data on AIDS/HIV through state and local health departments, surveys of special populations, and sentinel HIV surveillance programs at selected hospitals (in conjunction with CID); and collecting and analyzing data on HIV-related knowledge, beliefs, and behaviors through the National Health Interview Survey and the State-based Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (in conjunction with CCDPHP). Goal 4-related programs focus on strengthening international AIDS/HIV prevention capacities, including: providing scientific, managerial, and technical assistance to WHO, PAHO, other countries, and other international organizations; and sponsoring or co-sponsoring international workshops and conferences with ultilateral/bilateral agencies to exchange information and plan appropriate future strategies. Wilson 301/436-7032 Epidemiology Program Office The Epidemiology Program Office (EPO) participates in the following programs related to CDC's AIDS/HIV operational goals. The EPO has no AIDS/HIV monies appropriated in FY 1991, but participates in activities related to two of CDC's four AIDS/HIV goals. EPO activities related to Goal 3 focus on developing prevention technologies and promoting scientific knowledge in public policy and public health practice, including: developing and issuing guidelines for management of occupational exposures to HIV in conjunction with CID and NIOSH); publishing guidelines on AIDS/HIV home health care (in conjunction with CID). Goal 4-related activities focus on strengthening international prevention capacities, including: providing scientific, managerial, and technical assistance to WHO, PAHO, other countries, and other international organizations; and sponsoring or co-sponsoring international workshops and conferences with multilateral/bilateral agencies to exchange information and plan appropriate future strategies.
