ATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH The National Institutes of Health's (NIH) mission is to improve the health of the American people by: conducting and supporting biomedical research focused on the causes, prevention, and cure of diseases; supporting research training and research resource development; and using modem methods to communicate biomedical information. Figure 1.3 explains NIH's composition of 14 Institutes, Divisions and specialized units. Total NIH AIDS/HIV funding for FY 1991 is $804,567,000, accounting for 42.7% of the PHS spending on HIV. NIH has received consistent increases for HIV research since 1982, as shown in Table 3.E. FY 1991 monies are divided among its institutes, divisions and units as shown in Table 3.F.
