AMERICA Living With AIDS

From my travels and
involvement with the National Association of People with AIDS,
it has become painfully obvious that most of the country, if not the entire
nation, does not have coordinated, collaborative, and consistent
social and health care services. The tens of thousands of those of us
who are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus are crying out
for local, state, and national leadership. The majority of the time
we feel that no one is listening, that we have been abandoned by our
government and our society.
The HIV epidemic is much
too large for national, state, and local organizations and governments
to address separately or without some vehicle for coordination
and direction. Our attempts during the last eight years have been
incomplete, results spotty, and victories few and far between.
Innovative solutions are required if our institutions are not to be
brought any closer to the brink of disaster or chaos.
