                                  Bot þat fire wirkes noght thurgh kynde

                                  Als dos þe fire þat brinnes here,

                                  Als God has ordaynd, forwhy, it es
                                
                                  An instrument of Goddes ryghtwysnes,
                                
                                  Thurgh wilk þe saule most clensed be

                                  In purgatory, ar it may God se.
                                
                                  Alle þe fire þat es þar-in,
                                
                                  Es bot a maner of fyre to wast syn,
                                
                                  And noght divers fires, les and mare,

                                  Bot a maner of fire, als I sayd are,
                                
                                  Þat alle veniel syns þan sal waste,
                                
                                  Þat es unclensed here, lest and maste.
                                
                                  For als fyre þat caffe son may bryn,

                                  Gold may melt þat es lang þar-in,
                                
                                  Ryght swa þe fyre þar thurgh lang hete
                                
                                  Þat wastes smale syns, may wast grete,
                                
                                  And als þe hete of þe son þat comon es,

                                  Som men greves mare, and som men les,
                                
                                  Right swa þe fyre þat es þare,
                                
                                  Som sawles pyns les, and som mare;
                                
                                  For þe sawles byhoves duelle þar-in,

                                  Aftir þe charge es of þair syn.
                                
                                  Bot som sawles þar sal be delyver[d] sone,
                                
                                  Þat large penaunce here has done;
                                
                                  Som sal duel þar many a yhere,

                                  And lang lygyn in þair syn;
                                
                                  And þarfor says þus Saynt Austyn:
                                
                                    Necesse est quod tantum urat dolor,

                                    quantum erat amor; tanto enim quisquis
                                  
                                    torquetur diucius, quanto affectus eius
                                  
                                    venialibus ahherebat forcius.
                                  
                                  Saynt Austyn says "nedeful it es,
                                  Line 3168 
                                
                                  Þat sorow war als mykel and na les
                                
                                  For ilka syn and ilka trespas,
