Þat sight he sal se with gastly eghe With payn of dede þat he most dreghe. Here-of þe prophet Ieremy Line 2236 Spekes þus in his prophecy: Omnes inimici eius apprehenderunt eum inter angustias. He says: "omang his grete anguys Line 2240 Hym þai sal tak al hys enmys." Na vonder es if þe devels com þan In þe ende obout a synful man, For to flay hym and tempte and pyn, Line 2244 When þe devel com to Saynt Martyn In þe tyme of dede at his last day Hym for to tempte and for to flay: And in þe life of Saynt Bernard Line 2248 We rede þat when he drogh til dedeward, Þat þe devel þat es grisely and grym, Til hym come and asked hym, By what skille he wald, and bi [The MS. reads be.] what ryght; Line 2252 Chalange þe kyngdom of heven bright, Þan answerd Bernard þus mekely, And sayd: "I knaw þat I am unworthy, Thurgh myn-awen desert, to haf it Line 2256 When I sal out of þis world flit. Bot my Lorde Ihesu Crist ful of myght, Þat it has and weldes thurgh doble ryght, Thurgh right of his faders heritage, Line 2260 And alswa for our grete avauntage, Thurgh right of hys hard passion, Þat he tholed for our raunson, Þe ta right frely he graunted me, Line 2264 And þe tother til hym-self held he; Of was gyfte I chala[n]ge it by skille, Als þe lagh of his mercy wille."
