& saw his stat heyest of alle, Line 7112 1[þe folk discord nouht in a will; þan he þouht in hert full still,]1 [1-1These two lines are from P., and represent Wace's lines 6705-6, vol. i. p. 309.] & þoughte þe regne haue in [to haf þe regne on.] his syde; Her whuche a deseyte [here a desceite.] he spak þat tyde: Line 7116 ¶ "Of o þyng, sires, [sir.] y wot right wel, " þer-of ȝe owen to wyte [auh to witte.] som del, " Þat þe Daneys, wyþ men of Northweye, [with þe Norweíe.] " On ȝow wyl þey lyue & deye; Line 7120 " & for þou art no knyght [ert no kyng.] of armes, " Þe more þey wayte þis lond wyþ harmes; " On vs þey wyle þis somer [þe soner.] haste, " Þy casteles take, þy lond to-waste; Line 7124 " Here-of y rede þou nyme [take.] ȝeme, " Þy lond to fende, þy folk to queme." In casteles he sette garnysons [castels set þi warnisours.] ffor þe drede of oþer traysons; [traitours.] Line 7128 " To þo þat castels couþe loke, " To swylke y wolde þat þou hem toke." Þan seyde þe kyng to ffortyger, " Tak þou þe lokyng [take þe kepyng.] in þy power; Line 7132 " As þou wilt, hit schal be so; " Ouer þe wol y þat noman do; " Þe castelles alle y þe bykenne, [biken . . . . . bren.] " Now loke þat noman slo ne brenne.
