" ffor we namore wil mayntene ȝow. " Wyteþ wel, [wittes wele.] ȝour auncessours: " Were bolde & hardy conquerrours, 6768 " ¶ Belyn/ Constantyn/ & Maxymian/, [Nota.] [Brytonum Inperatores.] " Alle londes to Rome þey wan; " Þey mayntend hem self, & dide prowesse. " Bot now of ȝow, oþer weis hit esse! [ways is.] 6772 " Y ne wot wher-on hit ys long, [where it is long.] " On ȝow þer ne comeþ non oft [comes non ofte.] so strong " Þat ȝe ne myghte ȝow self defende, " ȝyf any grace on ȝow myghte desende. [of ȝow descend.] 6776 " Bot ȝe [are] [ere.] al gon out of kynde; " ȝour wikkednesse now ȝe fynde! " Turneþ ageyn, & wexeþ [Turnes agayn & waxes.] bolde, " & þenkes [thynk.] on ȝour auncestres olde, 6780 " Þat riche regions conquered! " ffor fyght ne fondyng were þey ferd. " fful late schul ȝe now conquere, " Syn [þat.] route of rascaille may ȝow ay fere. 6784 " Now schal bi sene what hit schal [be sene what it may.] vaille " When Outlandeys comen ȝow to [will ȝow.] assaille? " We haue ȝow closed þer most nede was; " & ȝyf ȝe defende wel þat pas 6788 " Wyþ archers & wyþ mangeneles, " & wel kepe þe carneles, [kirnels.] " Þer-on ȝe may boþe scheote & kaste.
