of Godestowe cesid in þe paiment of þe seide rente at þe fore|seide terme, hit sholde be lawfull to him or to his heiris to dis|treine all þe fore-seide londe til þei had paide þe fore-seide vij. shillings: & he & his heiris warantiȝid þe seid londe with all his pertinences, to þe fore-seide abbas & couent of Godestowe, a-geiniste all men & women for euir: & to witnes of þis he put to his seele: & is with-oute date.

[folio XLIII(53)] A composicion bitwene þe abbas of Godestowe & Iohn of welle for iij. pounde & xij. shillings bi-hinde of his rente.

1296, Aug. 6. Agreement between Godstow, and John of Welle, as to pay|ment, by instal|ments, of £3 12s. arrears of rent, with pro|visions for distraint, and sureties.

THE sentence of þis composicion is, þat Iohn of welle know|lichid him-self [folio XLIIIb(53b)] to be holde to dame alice Gorgis, Abbas of Godestowe, & to þe couent of þe same place, in lxxij. shillings of sterlinges of goode & lauful monei, þe whiche was bi-hinde of his rente of þe tenement in Garsindon, þe whiche tenement he claimid to holde of þe fore-seide abbas & couent in þe seide towne of Garsindon. He grauntid þe same monei, to be paid Also to þe same abbas & couent, at þe termis vndur write, truli & with-oute gile, lesseninge or lette, at Godestowe: þat is to sei, þe sone-dai next aftur þe Natiuite of oure ladi, xxiiij. yere of þe reine of kinge Edwarde þe sone of kinge henri, xx. shillings; & þe feste of seinte Thomas þe apostle þen next folowinge, xx. shillings; & at hockedai nexte folowinge, xx. shillings; & at þe natiuite of seinte Iohn baptiste next folowinge xij. shil|lings. And to more sewerte of þis þinge to be kepte, at the fore|seid termis, feiþefulli And with-oute gile, he bounde him-selfe & his godis londis & his tenementis meueable & vnmeueable where-so-euir þei were I-founde, to þe distreininge & con|streininge of þe kingis stiward & marchall þat bin for þe time, þat þei miht distreine fro dai in-to dai bi his bodi & londis & tenementes & goodis where-so-euir þey were I-founde til þat hit were satisfied fulli to þe abbas & couent of þe fore-seide lxxij. shillings & of þe harmis & expensis if þer fille ony bi þe occasion of þe paiment I-taried a-backe: & furþermore he founde to þe same abbas & couent borows, þat is to sei, hugh chinche [Chunch,' on next sheet.] of Garsindon, Thomas Smithe of yeftelei, hugh thorn|barn
