[6-text p 674] harneys [975] ¶ þe .vij. circumstance is in what manere he haþ done his sinne or none or howe þat he haþ suffryd howe folke han don to hire; [976] of þe same schal þe man tel pleynely al circumstance & where he haþ sinned; with commune bordel wymmen or none [977] or done his sinne in holy times or none; in fast|inge times or none or be-forne his schrift or aftere his latter schrift [978] & haþe par aduenture broken þere-fore his penance enioyned. by whos & whos consel. by sorcery or craft; al must be tolde [979] þes þinges after þat þei bien grete & smale Engregen þe conscience of man; & eke þe þreste þat is þi Iuge may þe better bue avised of his Iugement in ȝeueinge of þine penaunce; And þat is after þine contricione; [980] ¶ For vnderstandeþ wele þat after þe time þat aman haþe defouled his Baptime by sinne if he wil comme to saluacion; þere is none oþere weye bot be penytence & schrift & satisfactione. [981] And namely by þo tuo; if þere be a confessour to whiche he may schriue him ¶ And þe þred if he haue lif to performe it;

[982] þan schal man loke & consider if he wil make a trewe & profitable confessione þere moste bue foure condiciones; = [983] Firste it must be in sorwful bitternesse of hert ¶ As seiþe þe kinge ezechiel; = To god .I. wil remembre me al ȝe ȝeres of my lif in bitternesse of myne herte; [984] ¶ þis condicioun of bitter|nesse haþe .v. signes; þe first is þat confession most be schamefaste not for to kouerne ne to hiden his sinne; = bot for he haþ a-gilte his god & defouled his soule; [985] And here of seiþ seinte Austine; ¶ The hert travaileþ for schame of his sinne; & for he haþe grete schamfastnes he is digne to haue grete mercye; [986] whiche was þe confession of þe puplicane þat wolde not heue vp his eyȝen to heuen; ffor he hadde offended god of heuen; ffor whiche schamfastnesse he had anone þe mercy of god [987] ¶ And þerefore seiþ
