[The Remedy against Gluttony.]

[831] ¶ Aȝeynes glotonye is remedy. þe abstinence of his bodi; as seiþe Galienus. Bot þat hold .I. not meritorie. if þat he onely it do for þe hele of his body; ¶ Seint Austine wil þat abstinence be done for vertwe; & wiþ paciens [832] abstinens he seiþ is litel worþi bot if a man haue goode wil þere to // And bot if it be enforced be pacience & charite; & þat men do it for goddes saake & in hope to haue þe blisse of heuen;

[833] ¶ þe felawes of abstynence bien attemper|ance þat haldeþ þe mene in all þinges; eke schame þat escheweþ al disoneste; sufficeance þat sekeþ no Riche mete ne drinkes ne doþe no force of no owtrage apparelynge of mete [834] ¶ Mesure also þat distreyneþ bue resoun þe delavy appetite of eteinge; Sobernesse also þat restreyneþ þe outrage of drinke. [835] Sparynge also þat restreyneþ þe delicate ese to sitte att his mete softly; where-for summe folke stonden of here owen will & to eten att þe lasse layser

After glotony. þan commeþ lycherye for þes two sinnes bien so nyhe cosines þat often tim þei wil not departe; = [837] god wote þis sinne is displesant to god; for he seiþ him selfe do no lychery;// & þere-fore he put grete peynes aȝeines þis sinne. in þe olde lawe [838] If a wom|man þrall were taken in þis sinne sche scholde be beten with stones to þe deþ; And if sche were a gentil womman sche scholde be sleyne with stones; And if sche wer a bischopes douhtere sche scholde be bernte be goddes commandement; [839] ¶ Forþermore be sinne of licherye god dreynte al þe werlde att þe
