When Aglaes, his wife, herde þis Þat he was hir sonne Alexis Þat in bed dede laie þare, Line 565 Scho beganne to roupe & rare, And ofe hir heued scho drewe þe hare, For had scho neuer so mikil care. His wife kome þan wiþ sorowfull late, Wiþ goulinge, & wiþ rewfull grate, Line 570 Als scho wald all to watir writhe — So was scho sarie & vnblithe. Will i of þis na langer spelle, Bote forthe oure storie wil i tell. When þis folk sawe þis ferlie, Line 575 Þai loued god all-mightie. And þe pape and his clergie To þe cors ȝede full dereworthelie [Ms. pape st. cors.] And wande ite in full riche folde, Þat brighte schane als duse þe golde. Line 580 To þe kirk þai wald him bere; Bote mighte naman þe corse stere For prees of man þate was so strange, [Ms. man st. men.] Þat nane mighte stere for mikil thrange: For seke men þat had vnhele Line 585 And dombe men þat miȝte noȝte mele, Deefe men þat miȝte noȝte here And halte men þat miȝte noȝte stere, Blind men þat wantid sight, Mesele men þat had no mighte: Line 590 All ware þai made hale & fere, Als swithe als þai neghid þe bere Þare sainte Alexe corse was loken, For whaim þe steuen before had spoken. For-thi was þare swilk prees & thrange, Line 595 Þat nane mighte gete gate to gange. Þe wise men of Rome þe whiles Vmbe-thoȝte þaim ofe wyles, How þai mighte breke þate grete thrange, To gete þaim gate for to gange: Line 600 Þai strewid penyes in þe strete To ger þe pure luke to þaire fete; Þe riche gatte þaim gate before, Þe whilis þai gadird penyes þore. Bote for all þis vnneþes mighte þai Line 605 Wynne to þe kirk þat ilk daie.
