PREFACE

THE generous gift of this volume to the Early English Text Society by the American owner of the manuscript was a source of very special gratification to Dr. Furnivall, and the more so because many of the distinguished English scholars of the United States have actively associated themselves with the work of the Society.

Much of the editorial investigation could only be done in England; and the delay in the appearance of the volume is due to the preoccupation of its editor, Professor Hardin Craig. The thanks of the Society are due to him for his work.

I. G.
