ÞE Bok of Jhesu cristes kuynde, þe sone of Dauid, ha we in muynde. he þat is verrey God and Mon, þe sone is cleped Abraham. Abraham gat Ysaak þo. [ 5] Ysaak gat Jacob also. Jacob gat Judas anon And his Breþeren euerichon. Judas gat, as we beo war, Phares and Ȝaram, of Thamar. [ 10] Sone þeraftur þat Phares Gat Esrom wiþ-outen lees. Esrom, he þenne gat Anoþur Child þat Aram hat. Aram gat, wiþ-outen gabbe, [ 15] A child þat hette Amynadabbe. Amynadab gat wiþ Riht him þat in name Naȝon hiht. Naason sone þenne gat he Salmon, þat was so fre. [ 20] Salmon, he gat þon Bos of Raab, þat wommon. Bos wente forþ in trouþe And he gat Obeth of Ruthe. Eȝechias gat in pres him þat hette Manasses. Manasses, he gat þon [ 55] him þat was I-called Amon. Amon þenne wiþ good wille Josyas he gat ful stille. Josyas, of whom we speke, Jeconias he gat eke, [ 60] And his Breþeren bi certeyn stage, Of Babilon in þat passage. And aftur þulke passynge Of Babilon, wiþ-oute lesynge, Jeconias gat ful wel [ 65] hym þat hette Salatiel. þis Salatiel heere Gat Ȝorobabel wiþ good chere. Abraham is forte Mene 'ffadur of mony folk atene'. Abraham, as I haue seid, To ffader of mony folk is leid, Bitokneþ þat crist þe fader is Of alle hem þat lyuen in þis. [ 150] And also þis Ysaak þat we biforen of spak, Is vndurstonde 'a lauȝwhyng' Or a-noþur gret Joyng: hit tokneþ him, wiþ-outen drede, [ 155] Of whom þe Angel spac in dede whon he to þe schepherde tolde 'Joye I schewe ȝou monyfolde, And þat schal euere-more beo To alle pepul to here and seo.' [ 160] Jacob is vndurstonden her verreily 'a supplaunter': þat was crist, vr aller bote, þat caste and putte vndur foote þe fend of helle fer beo-hynde [ 165] þat wastor was to al monkynde, And his dwellyng-place he brac And entred in at þat ȝat. Judas is as muche to say As 'blisfulliche to knowleche ay': [ 170] þis was crist God an hiȝ, As witnesset þe Ewangely, þer as he seide 'ffadur fre, In heuene and eorþe I knouleche þe;' Also þe salm good and dere [ 175] þus seiþ in þe sautere 'vr lord is blisful euer-more In his holynesses' þerfore his holynesses is to calle þo þat ben his menbres alle. [ 180] he vs graunte of his grace In his blisse to haue a place.
