Liber generacionis Jhesu Christi fili Dauid (Math. 1, 1-16).

ÞE Bok of Jhesu cristes kuynde, þe sone of Dauid, ha we in muynde. he þat is verrey God and Mon, þe sone is cleped Abraham. Abraham gat Ysaak þo. [ 5] Ysaak gat Jacob also. Jacob gat Judas anon And his Breþeren euerichon. Judas gat, as we beo war, Phares and Ȝaram, of Thamar. [ 10] Sone þeraftur þat Phares Gat Esrom wiþ-outen lees. Esrom, he þenne gat Anoþur Child þat Aram hat. Aram gat, wiþ-outen gabbe, [ 15] A child þat hette Amynadabbe. Amynadab gat wiþ Riht him þat in name Naȝon hiht. Naason sone þenne gat he Salmon, þat was so fre. [ 20] Salmon, he gat þon Bos of Raab, þat wommon. Bos wente forþ in trouþe And he gat Obeth of Ruthe. Obeth gat Jesse, to telle, [ 25] As bereþ witnesse þis gospelle. Jesse gat, wiþ-outen lesyng, him þat was cald Dauid þe kyng. And þe goode kyng Daui Gat Salomon soone, þat was witti, [ 30] Of hire þat þo called was Vries wyf in þat plas— hire nome nis not here present, ffor heo to monnes deþ asent. Salomon, þat was so wys, [ 35] Gat Roboam of muche prys. And he þat so Roboam hette, he gat Abias wiþ-outen lette. Abias, haue we no drede, he gat Ason in his dede. [ 40] Ason þenne gat in game þat Josephath hette bi name. Josephath, þat I of say, Joram he gat, wiþ-outen nay. Joram aftur in a stounde [ 45] Oȝias gat, as hit is founde. Oȝias, þat was bold, Gat Joatan, as hit is told. Joatan nas not to lat, Sone þer-aftur he Achaȝ gat. [ 50] Achaȝ þenne in tyme schert Eȝechias he gat in quert. Eȝechias gat in pres him þat hette Manasses. Manasses, he gat þon [ 55] him þat was I-called Amon. Amon þenne wiþ good wille Josyas he gat ful stille. Josyas, of whom we speke, Jeconias he gat eke, [ 60] And his Breþeren bi certeyn stage, Of Babilon in þat passage. And aftur þulke passynge Of Babilon, wiþ-oute lesynge, Jeconias gat ful wel [ 65] hym þat hette Salatiel. þis Salatiel heere Gat Ȝorobabel wiþ good chere. Ȝorobabel, as hit is seid, Gat Abiuth in a breid. [ 70] Abiuth, þat was so grim, he gat þenne Eliachim. Eliachim also þerfor In þat tyme he gat Asor. Asor gat him, nis not nay, [ 75] Sadok, soþli for to say. Sadok, þat was so good, Gat Achim wiþ Milde mood. Achim þenne wiþ his bodi Gat Eliuth, sikerli. [ 80] Eliuth þenne, as we rede, Eliaȝar he gat in dede. Eliaȝar, he gat of his kynde Mathan, forsoþe, as we fynde.

Mathan þenne wiþ his blood [ 85] Gat Jacob, þat was so good. Jacob, to vndurstonde, Gat Joseph, Marie hosebonde; Of whuche Marie Jhesus is boren, þat crist is cald vs biforen. [ 90] þis is þe strengþe of vre gospel, As Men in E(n)glische may ou tel.

Þis ilke Joseph and Marie dere, we fynde of o kinreden þei were; þerfore hit is writen þus [ 95] In holi writ to rede to vs. Matheu, þe goode Ewangelist Of vre lord Jhesu Crist, he wrot longe her-bifore þis Bok of kuynde of cristes lore, [ 100] In whuche al Monkyndes hele was bigonnen aboute to dele. ffor in þis nome of Jhesu Is bitokned muche vertu: Jhesu is to vndurstonde [ 105] 'Sauer of Mon out of bonde'. Crist in to þis world com, þat is soþfast God and Mon, To buggen vs of helle fre— So mihte non oþur do bote he; [ 110] þe nome of Jhesu her so hih þus he folfulde as kyng mihti. þe sone he was cald þo Of Dauid and Abraham also. Dauid is as muche to say [ 115] As 'an hondstrong mon ay'; ffor he asayled, ouercom and slouh, Soþliche, as I telle ȝou now, þulke stronge false enemye þat Godus pepel wolde distriȝe. [ 120] vre strengest Conquerour was only Crist, vr saueour, þat wiþ þe deuel foul and grym, fful of Atter and of venym, ffauȝt here on eorþly lond [ 125] And ouercom him wiþ strong hond; As mihti he him ouercom And dampned him be Rihtwis dom. Abraham is forte Mene 'ffadur of mony folk atene'. Spiritualy com Jhesus hende ffor vre hele In to þis ende [ 140] Bi þos patriarkes goode þat we toforen of vndurstode. þe nome of hem euerichone Is vndurstonde Jhesu one, [144 Ms. In.] þe vndurstondyng of alle hem [ 145] Is forto mene þe hele of Men. Abraham, as I haue seid, To ffader of mony folk is leid, Bitokneþ þat crist þe fader is Of alle hem þat lyuen in þis. [ 150] And also þis Ysaak þat we biforen of spak, Is vndurstonde 'a lauȝwhyng' Or a-noþur gret Joyng: hit tokneþ him, wiþ-outen drede, [ 155] Of whom þe Angel spac in dede whon he to þe schepherde tolde 'Joye I schewe ȝou monyfolde, And þat schal euere-more beo To alle pepul to here and seo.' [ 160] Jacob is vndurstonden her verreily 'a supplaunter': þat was crist, vr aller bote, þat caste and putte vndur foote þe fend of helle fer beo-hynde [ 165] þat wastor was to al monkynde, And his dwellyng-place he brac And entred in at þat ȝat. Judas is as muche to say As 'blisfulliche to knowleche ay': [ 170] þis was crist God an hiȝ, As witnesset þe Ewangely, þer as he seide 'ffadur fre, In heuene and eorþe I knouleche þe;' Also þe salm good and dere [ 175] þus seiþ in þe sautere 'vr lord is blisful euer-more In his holynesses' þerfore his holynesses is to calle þo þat ben his menbres alle. [ 180] he vs graunte of his grace In his blisse to haue a place.
