hec mando vobis vt diligatis (Joh. 15, 17-25).
Jhesu seide þis wordus meke To his disciples whon he speke: "þis," he seide, "I to ȝou sende þat ȝe loue to-geder hende. And þeih þe world ȝou hate þe more, Me hit hedde in hate to-fore. ȝif ȝe of þe world were, he wolde loue his þing dere; But ȝe beo not þerof so, ffor I haue chose ȝou þer-fro: [ 10] þe world, ful of debate, þerfore haþ ȝou in hate. Biþenkeþ ȝou of wordus myne þat I haue seid mony a tyme: A seruaunt, bi good record, [ 15] Nis not more þen his lord. ffor ȝif þei han pursuwed me, Pursuwed of hem schul ȝe be; ȝif þei my word kept haue, ȝoures schul þei kepe and saue. [ 20] þei schul ȝow do al þis þing ffor my nome knowlechyng: Mi ffadur wol þei knowe nouht Ne me þat hem hider brouht. Ȝif I hedde not to hem come [ 25] And spoken wiþ hem ofte in wone, þen schulde þei not han had Synne þat is in hem stad: Now ha þei excusaciun non Of heor synnes euerichon. [ 30] hose hateþ fulliche me, Mi ffader also in hate haþ he. Ned I no werkes wrouȝt in hem þat non oþur wrouȝt er þen, Soþli, now to biginne, [ 35] þen schulde þei not han had no synne. þei han sen, and hated me, And my ffadur also so fre. Bute for þis word writen of olde In heore lawe folfuld beo scholde: [ 40] In hate þei hedde me neuer-þe-les ffor myn owne kyndenes."
By moni skiles goode and clere Crist, vr gode Mayster, here, he sendeþ vs techynges hider [ 45] Euer for to loue to-gider. vche mon schulde loue oþur As Broþur schulde loue Broþur. wiþ-outen loue of godus delyt Goodnes may not vs profyt, [ 50] Ne good loue may not beo had But goodnes beo wiþ him lad; Bi wȝuche loue of goodnesse A Mon mai him to god redresse. ffor his loue þat is so heiȝ, [ 55] we schulde soffre pacientli Of þis wrecched world þe hate, Boþe erly and eke late.

ffor hit most vs hate nede whom þat hit seoþ in dede [ 60] þat wol not to þe loue drawe þat hit doþ in dede and sawe. But ofte vr goode lord Jhesus Bi him-self cumforteþ vs, þer he seide him-self sone: [ 65] 'þis I Comaunde ȝou to done þat ȝe loue wel to-gider, þerfore weore ȝe i-brouht hider.' Ȝit he putte more þerto And seide on þis wyse also: [ 70] 'Ȝif þe world þerfore ow hate, Beo ȝe no-þing þerof mate, ffor witeþ wel, ȝou to-forn To me haþ hit hate iboren.' But muche pepul leeueþ nouȝt [ 75] [75 l. bereþ.] In worldly hate to beo brouht. I ȝou telle þerfore biforn, þat is wondur gret skorn þat eny Membre of a Mon Schulde ben herre and more told on [ 80] þen þe Croune of his hed, þat hiȝest is wiþ-outen dred. Siker, þou forsakest to beo A Membre of godus bodi freo, But þou wolt soffre meke [ 85] þe worldus hate, þat is so seke, wiþ þat ilke hiȝest hede, Crist, þat for vs suffrede dede. Crist to his disciplus seide And þis resun to hem leyde: [ 90] 'ȝif ȝe þe worldus were, iwis, hit wolde loue þat weore his.' þis ilke word here he seiþ To al-holi churche of ffeiþ. Ofte-tyme Crist hit calleþ, [ 95] Diuersliche, as hit falleþ, holy churche, þat is dere, Bi nome of þis wor(l)d here; And bi þis word here in plas: 'God', he seiþ, 'in heuene was, [ 100] Reconcilyng þe world wel To him-self eueridel'— þat world is folliche forte mene Alholy churche at ene. And in anoþur place, to se, [ 105] he seiþ a word of dygnite: 'Godus sone in goodnes breme Com not þe world for to deme, But þe goode world vche a lym Schulde ben wel saued bi him.' [ 110] ffor, as Jon seiþ in dede, In his gospel as we rede: 'we han euer a good voket Toforen his holi fader set, þat rihtwys is and helpere [ 115] Aȝeyn vr synnes eueriwhere.' þe world is here forte say Al-holi chirche niht and day. And ȝit al þe world to worche hateþ al-holi churche. [ 120] þen beo we þus þerate: þe world doþ þe world hate. þe Enemy world, þat is wood, hateþ holy churche good; þat on, haþ lost gostli place, [ 125] þe toþur reconcyled bi grace; þe to world þat dampned is hateþ þe toþur touward blis; þe world defouled ful of synne hateþ holichirche clene wiþ-Inne. [ 130] þis ilke holi chirche so clene, þat god in his sone to mene To him-self Reconciled, hit was clene vndefuiled; Also bi Crist þat tyme [ 135] hit was saued fro muche pyne, To whuche, þe beter for to lyuen, Bi Crist alle synnes were forȝiuen. þeose weore chosen to good astate ffrom þe world ful of hate, [ 140] þat dampned is, enemy wikke, And defouled wiþ synne þikke. Of þat lompe bi tyme and spas Bi whuche in Adam al perisched was, weore mad vessels of merci, [ 145] In wȝuche þe goode world to cri, þat holi chirche we calle moun, Is falle to Reconsiliacioun; þe wrecched world þe more hateþ wiþ holy churche and debateþ, [ 150] þat of þe same lumpe cam, Apartenyng to þat vessel þan Of nuy and wraþþe, euer in bost; Euerlastyngliche þei schul be lost. But whon he hedde seid here [ 155] 'ȝif ȝe of þis world were, þe world wolde, soþ hit is, ffulliche loue þat were his. ȝe nare not of þe world so: I ha chose ȝou fulliche þerfro. [ 160] he is wikked and vnwrest, þerfore to hate ȝou hit is prest.' þeose disciplus weore not chose Out of þis world, þat goþ to lose, Bi her owne disseruynge, [ 165] Of whos tofore-lyuynge ffewe goode vertuwes cam, Til hit was ȝiuen bi grace to ham;

Ne þey weore not, as we fynde, Chosun bi wey of heiȝ kynde, [ 170] ffor al vr kuynde, til þer cum bote, Defouled was In Adames rote— þis synful dede, þat was so ille, was al I-don bi freo wille. þei weore chose, soþ to sey, [ 175] By grace of god þat is verrey. Crist þerfore to hem preid: 'þenk on þe word þat I haue seid. þe seruaunt bi good record Nis no better þen his lord. [ 180] ffor as þei me dude pursuwe, Porsuwe schal ow mony vntrewe; þo þat my word dude kepe. ȝoures þei schal, I ow hete.' vr lordes biddyng erli and late [ 185] Stureþ his seruauns to soffre bate Of þis world so venimous, þat euer is enemy to vs; ȝif we hit soffre wiþ-oute mod, hit wol vs torne to muche good. [ 190] A grettore saumple ne more bet hou miht he him-self set? Petur seiþ, þe apostel dere, þat crist suffrede for vs here, To ȝiue vs ensaumple in plas [ 195] Mekeliche forte suwe his tras. Crist seide: 'al þis ilke schame þei schal ȝou do for myn name, Ow to hate in alle wyse, Porsuwe ȝor wordus to dispise.' [ 200] whi for his nome hit to beo don, þis is good to wite son. 'In ȝow schul þei me hate newe, In ȝow schul þei me pursuwe, And bi enchesun þat ȝoure word [ 205] Is myn and of myn hord, þerfore, I ou telle eke, In no wyse wol þei hem kepe, ffor my nome þei schal þis do, And not for ȝoures, take hit so. [ 210] Riht as þei more corsud are þat don ȝow þis dissese and fare ffor myn name in ȝow dresset, Riht so are ȝe þe more blesset þat suffren mekely al þis schome [ 215] ffor me and also in my nome.'
