Intrauit Jhesus in quoddam Ca∣stellum (Luc. 10, 38-42).
Seint luc, þat holi mon, Telleþ vs here, as he wel con, þat Jhesus entrede In to a Castel wiþ muche worschip feir and wel. þen was þer a wommon, [ 5] Martha was hire rihte nom: heo tok Jhesus in to hire hous wiþ semblaunt good and dilicious. And þer was Martha suster in hiȝe, whos nome was cald Marie: [ 10] þe whuche sat, as wommon meke, A-louh bifore godus feete And hedde lyking forte here þe wordus of god þat weore so dere. Martha was bisy, as was hire wone, To serue tentyfliche godus sone. As Martha stod Jhesu bifore, þis wordus seide heo to him þore: "Lord, whi not recche ȝe þat my suster nul not wiþ me [ 20] Serue to ow here in þis stede, But let me one in word and dede? Sey to hire þerfore sum-þing, Me to helpe in hiȝing." þen onsweryng vr lord gon say [ 25] To gode Martha þat ilke day: "Martha, Martha, þou art bisy And istorbed þe more in hiȝ. wherfore i sey, on is nedful,— So þat hit beo nou i wol. [ 30] Marie þe beste partye haþ chose, þat fro hire nas not do to lose." [32 Ms. for st. fro.] þis in þe Tixt of vre gospel, As Luc hit seiþ feir and wel.
ÞE goode clerk holy Beede [ 35] Expouneþ þis gospel feire in dede, And seide of Martha þis wordus þus: þat heo was wommon Religius And tok Jhesu into hire hous, hire loue to him was precious; [ 40]

And for hire suster sat to heere Godus wordus þat weore dere; ffor heo trauayled wiþ so gret wille [ 45] And hire suster sat þer so stille, þerfore vr lord aske heo wolde whi hire suster hire helpe ne scholde. Martha þis him asked þo As domes-mon bitwenen hem bo. [ 50] God onswerde for Mari As hire avoket ful treweli. [49-50 u. 51-52 im Ms. umgesetzt.] ffor Jhesus seide in his sawe fful bisy heo was al þat dawe, whil on was neodful in þat pres; [ 55] Marie þe betur partie ches, þat nas neuere, as I þe sei, ffro hire take ne don awei. [58 Ms. for. no dom.] Nou ha we herd Marthas askyng And hou þat god onswere dude bring. [60 Ms. onswerde.] Marie was aboute þat hord To here and lerne godus word; And Martha bisi aboute eode hou heo mihte best god fede: þerfore he seide þat Marie [ 65] hedde chose þe beter partie. At þis feste þat Martha made was Marie Joyful and glade, And whon Marie, I ow bihete, hedde herd þis godus wordus swete, [70 tilge hedde.] In to hir herte heo tok hem sad And þer hem wrot and aftur rad. And whon Martha askede hire askyng, Aȝeyn þen seide not heuene-kyng 'Rys and go forþ anon [ 75] And help þi suster in þis won'. A gret swetnesse hedde Marie þon To here him speke, god and Mon, ffor hire þhouȝte hit profyt more, þen to beo aboute hire baly þore. [ 80] hir suster trauaylde bodily, And heo ful gostly, witerly; Marie was þo In alle wyse Aboute þerfore þe beter seruise. þenne seide Jhesu to Martha freo: [ 85] Aboute muche occupaciun þeiȝ þou beo, Aboute (!) on, he seide, was more nedful: þe sely soule from serwe to pul. ffor beter so a-twynne þei were, þen forte ha serued to-gedere Ifere, [ 90] he seide Marie hedde chose þe bet; þat oþur for non vuel he hit set— ffor Marthas doinge was ful good; Bote Maries þe beter, þer heo stod, ffor heo was aboute bote o þing, [ 95] And Martha monye in doing. þat o þing was soule-hele, þat Mony þinges passeþ in his dele. þerfore seide Jhesu bi þis skil 'O þing is nedful mon vntil', [ 100] Not only oþing from moni to gon, But mony godnesses to come from on. Mony þinges are þo to glade þat for vs in þis world god made; Bute verrey o þing þat is he, [ 105] On in godhede, bote persones þre, þat made heuene and erþe wiþ much wynne And alle þinges þat ben þer-Inne, And þeose and oþur þinges Made o kyng of alle kynges. [ 110] þerfore seide Jhesu in hiȝ þat o þyng was Necessari, ffor he was on, in word and dede, And of him þus hedde þei neode. þat kyng þat gracius is [ 115] Bring vs, lord, to þi blis.
