Venit Jhesus in partes Cesaree Ph[ilipp]i (Math. 16, 13-19).
Herkeneþ now, I wol ȝow telle
As Mathew seiþ in þis gospelle.
Jhesus com þat tyme in heiȝ
To þe cuntre of Ceesar philippi,
Askinde his disciples þere [ 5]
And seide to hem þat wiþ him were:
"whom sigge ȝe men of þis Cuntre
þat þe sone of mon scholde be?"
þen seide his disciples to crist:
"Summe seyen, Jon þe Baptist, [ 10]
And summe seyen Elesye,
And summe forsoþe seyn Jeremye,
Or on of þe prophetes here
Men seyn hit is in alle manere."
þo seide Jhesus openly: [ 15]
"whom wol ȝe seyn þenne ho am I?"
Symon Peter onswerde þon
And þus to seye he bigon:
"þou art crist, heuene-kyng,
þe sone of God, holy liuyng." [ 20]
Jhesu onswerde wiþ feir mod
And seide to petur, þer he stod:
"I-blesset þou art and ma,
þat art cleped Symon Bariona:
ffor bi flesch ne blod, I sei þe, [ 25]
Miht þis not to þe brouht be,
But þorw my ffader þat is in heuen
was hit þe brouht wiþ mylde steuen.
Soþly, nou to þe sei I:
þou art stedefast, trewe as ston is tri:
vppon þe, petur, trewe as ston,
I schal buylde my chirche anon,
Aȝeyn wȝuche chirche, I þe say,
þe ȝates of helle not stonde may.
And I schal ȝiue þe keyes euene [ 35]
Of ȝates of þe kyndom of heuene.
And what þou euere In eorþe dost bynde,
In heuene bounde schal men hit fynde:
And what þou vnbyndest in eorþe here,
In heuene vnbounde beo hit clere." [ 10]
þis is þe tixt of vre gospelle,
As seint Matheu doþ vs telle.
Grete clerkes doþ vs teche
what þis gospel is to preche.
þis phelip Cesar þat we of kenne, [ 45]
was heroudes broþer, þe ȝongur, þenne,
In hos tyme, soþ hit is,
God suffrede his passiun, I-wis.
In his ffader tyme þon
was I-bore boþe god and mon, [ 50]
As hit is in stories seid
And for witnesse in bokes leyd.
þat Philip in honour of Cesar forþi
Let make a Citee feir and heiȝ,
And in his nome and Cesar also [ 55]
he clepte hit Cesar philip þo,
And in þat cuntre Bi North and Souþ
Cesar philip hit is cald wiþ mouþ.
þe kynges of Rome þat þo were newe,
þat forþur in þis storie suwe, [ 60]
Alle kyngdomes weore þei wont to make
Tribut to hem to bringe and take. [62 Ms. Trubut.]
þerfore vs þinkeþ worþi hit was,
þer eorþly kynges her tribut tas
Of al oþur þat heore sogettes be, [ 65]
vchon in his owne degre,
þat þer þe kyng of heuene hiȝe
Tok tribut of his sogettes trye.
þat tribut is studefast bileeue,
þe soule to saue and not to greue. [ 70]
þerfore he seide to hem þon
'whom siggen heo is þe sone of mon?'
he asked not þis of hem so
ffor vnknowen nas hit not him to,
Ne also he asked hit not of hame [ 75]
ffor þen-haunsyng of his name,
