Symon Peter onswerde þon And þus to seye he bigon: "þou art crist, heuene-kyng, þe sone of God, holy liuyng." [ 20] Jhesu onswerde wiþ feir mod And seide to petur, þer he stod: "I-blesset þou art and ma, þat art cleped Symon Bariona: ffor bi flesch ne blod, I sei þe, [ 25] Miht þis not to þe brouht be, But þorw my ffader þat is in heuen was hit þe brouht wiþ mylde steuen. Soþly, nou to þe sei I: þou art stedefast, trewe as ston is tri: vppon þe, petur, trewe as ston, I schal buylde my chirche anon, Aȝeyn wȝuche chirche, I þe say, þe ȝates of helle not stonde may. And I schal ȝiue þe keyes euene [ 35] Of ȝates of þe kyndom of heuene. And what þou euere In eorþe dost bynde, In heuene bounde schal men hit fynde: And what þou vnbyndest in eorþe here, In heuene vnbounde beo hit clere." [ 10] þis is þe tixt of vre gospelle, As seint Matheu doþ vs telle.
Grete clerkes doþ vs teche what þis gospel is to preche. þis phelip Cesar þat we of kenne, [ 45] was heroudes broþer, þe ȝongur, þenne, In hos tyme, soþ hit is, God suffrede his passiun, I-wis.
