Guy of Warwick, in deep remorse, would expiate his offences against God. He told his wish to Alquin, Dean of a religious brotherhood, and asked counsel for the welfare of his soul. The holy friar prepared a sermon, in which he instructed Guy how to discriminate between virtue and vice. The discourse unfolds principles of spiritual growth through a twofold medium, the renun∣ciation of evil and the achievement of good. Alquin concludes with an appeal for benevolence, which is en∣forced by an account of the incident of the widow of Zarephath.
