And þe wise sayd̛ vnto hym̛; "þis way is bothe fayr & gude, & wuld̛ lede vs to a gude herbarie." And þe toder sayd̛; "Nay, þis way, þuff aƚƚ it be fowle & sharpe, yit it w[ill] lede vs vnto a gude herberie; and þerfor̛ I cownceƚƚ þe latt vs go here-bye." So þis fule wolde not trow bod̛ þat at he saw, & wold̛ algatis go þe fayr way, and þe wise wold̛ not lefe hym̛ bod felud̛ hym̛, þuf aƚƚ it wer agayns his wiƚƚ. So as þai w[ent] samen, thevis mett with þaim, and þai garte put þaim in prison̛. And afterward̛ þe kyng garte bryng befor̛ hym̛ aƚƚ þat wer in prison̛. So þies ij war broght befor þe kyng and feƚƚ at stryfe befor̛ hym̛, ffor þe wyse made playnt of þe fule, how þat he wolde not truste on̛ hym̛ of þe way, and þe fule complenyd̛ of þe wyse becauce he folowid̛ hym̛ & wiste he was bod a fule. And þan̛ þe kyng gaf a sentence & bat at þai bothe sulde be hanged̛, þe fule becauce he wold̛ not trow þe wyse, & þe wise becauce he folowd̛ þe fule.
