Satisfaccio. Satisfacit viuus pro
mortuo.
We rede in 'Legenda Lombardica,' how som̛ tyme þer was a womman̛ þat was a grete synner, to so mekuƚƚ at sho had done homage vnto þe devuƚƚ. And when̛ tyme drew nere at sho sulde dye, hur son̛ cownceld̛ hur to be shrevyn̛. And sho ansswerd̛ hym̛ & sayd̛ þat shrufte mot not profett hur; not-with-stondyng he laburd̛ hur so att sho grantid̛, & bad hym̛ feche þe preste. Bod or þe preste come, þer apperid̛ vnto hur many fendis, þurgℏ vgsomnes & drede of þe whilke sho dyed̛. And when̛ hur son̛ come agayn̛ & fande sho was dead̛, he made mekuƚƚ sorow, for he knew hur syn̛ euere dele. And he went & shrafe hym̛ of þat syn̛ at sho had done, & did þer-for̛ vij wynter penance. And þat done, his moder apperid̛ vnto hym̛ & thankid̛ hym̛, & tolde hym̛ how þat þurgℏ his penance-doyng sho was delyverd̛ out of payn̛.
