DCLXVII.
Quietem corporis et mentis nititur demon eciam
visibiliter impedire.
Saynt Gregor̛ tellis; "som tyme þer was a man̛ þat hight Martyn̛, and he led a solitarie lyfe. And þe devuƚƚ had dispite here-att, & in lyknes of a serpent he laburd & keste for to lett hym̛. And þis serpent on̛ a tyme be hym̛ selfe come into þe cafe whar̛ þis Martyn̛ led his lyfe in wyldernes, and when̛ he was alone in his prayers, sho stude vp ryght befor hym̛, and when̛ he wold̛ lay hym̛ down̛, sho wolde lay hur down̛. And on̛ a tyme þis holy man̛ putt furst his hand & syne his fute nakid vnto hur, & sayd̛; 'And þou hase lefe for to smyte me, I saƚƚ not lett the.' And when̛ þai had vsid þis iij yere samen, at þe laste þis fals enmy, þe devuƚƚ, was ouercommen̛ with his mekenes & vanysshid away from̛ hym̛."
