Saynt Ierom̛ tellis how þat when̛ Hillarion̛ had lefte aƚƚ maner of oþer þingis and was giffen̛ alonelie vnto his prayers, he sufferd̛ many snybbis of þe fend̛; & when̛ he was in his prayers þe fend̛ apperid̛ vnto hym̛ in many lyknessis. So it happend̛ on̛ a tyme when̛ he was in his prayers, becauce he wolde be lett with no maner of sight, he sett hym̛ down̛ on̛ his kneis & on̛ his elbowys, & layd̛ his face down̛ vnto þe ertℏ. And onone þe devuƚƚ come & sett hym̛ stridlyngis on his bakk̘, & dang hym̛ in þe sydes with sharpe spurris, & laid̛ on̛ his head̛ with a swip̛ & said̛; "Wharto syttys þou þus scornand̛ & nappis?" And he was als hevy on̛ his bakk as it had bene a grete sekk fuƚƚ of barlie.
