hym̛ happend se þe doghter of a paynoms preste, & he axked to hafe hur vnto his wyfe. And þis preste wente vnto his [MS. our; Harl. MS. deos suos.] goddis in his temple, & axkid̛ þaim cownceƚƚ & said̛ þe monk wold̛ algatis hafe his doghter to wyfe, "whethur saƚƚ I giff hur vnto hym̛ or nay?" And þe fend ansswerd̛ hym̛ agayn̛ & said̛; "Gyff hur not vnto hym̛ bod if he furste forsake his God̛ & his baptym̛." And he went & told̛ þe monk, & he did aƚƚ as he bad hym̛. And onone þer come oute of his mouthe a white duffe, whilk þat flow vnto hevyn̛. And þan̛ þis preste went agayn̛ and axkid cownceƚƚ att ℏis god̛, and he ansswerd̛ hym̛ agayn̛ & said̛; "Gyff nott yitt þi doghter vnto hym̛, for yitt his God helpis hym̛, þuf aƚƚ he hafe forsaken̛ Hym̛." And þis preste come agayn̛ & tolde þe monke, and þis monke made grete sorow & said̛; "A, so wo is me! Loo! God duse me gude agayn̛ iƚƚ." And be þe cownceƚƚ of a gude holie olde man̛ he was shrevyn̛ and did penance, and adled̛ afterward̛ for to see þe duffe þat he had loste commyng agayn̛ vnto hym̛, and entred in att his mouthe.
